Fieldguide is building software that automates and streamlines work for audit, advisory, and tax practitioners at the world's largest CPA firms. The company is backed by top-tier investors including Goldman Sachs Growth Equity, Bessemer Venture Partners, Y Combinator, and others.
This is a player-coach role leading Fieldguide's Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team. You will start hands-on, working directly in customer deployments, writing production code, and solving complex technical problems while simultaneously building and scaling the team around you. As the team grows, your focus will shift toward leadership, but you'll remain close to the work and report directly to the CTO/co-founder.
Key responsibilities as a player include: leading important deployments for the largest enterprise customers from scoping through production (including single-tenant and government-cloud environments); writing production code to build agents, integrations, and tools; handling the hardest technical problems directly; and serving as the senior technical voice with customers, acting as a trusted advisor to partners, CIOs, and audit leaders on AI agent deployment.
As a coach, you'll build the FDE team by hiring, coaching, and growing engineers who can both build and work directly with customers; turn field learnings into repeatable playbooks, tools, and metrics that accelerate time-to-value; and identify patterns across deployments to work with Product and Engineering on converting customer-specific solutions into reusable platform features.
The role focuses on bringing AI agents into high-stakes professional work, particularly in audit and compliance contexts. You'll work closely with Product, Engineering, and Customer leadership, and maintain comfort with senior enterprise stakeholders in regulated or complex environments.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of leadership experience in forward deployed, deployment, solutions, or customer engineering roles (e.g., FDE leadership at Palantir or similar, Field CTO roles, or leading technical work with large enterprise customers)
- Recent hands-on production software development experience with desire to continue coding (this is not a manage-only role)
- Experience leading or mentoring engineers with excitement about building a team from early stage
- Comfort presenting to and advising senior enterprise stakeholders, especially in regulated or complex environments
- Good judgment about building for individual customers versus platform solutions, with ability to push back on scope
- Excitement about deploying AI agents in high-stakes professional work
BONUS:
- Experience at Big 4 firms (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) or major consulting firms (Accenture, McKinsey, BCG, Bain)
- Knowledge of audit, accounting, risk, or compliance
- Production experience deploying LLM or agent-based systems
