ServiceNow is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to design, build, ship, and operate model-driven applications that power the company's optimization products. This role sits at the intersection of advanced algorithms and AI-native development practices.
You will own the full lifecycle of optimization applications in production at scale, including API design, data ingestion, multiprocessing, observability, algorithm development, performance benchmarking, and automated testing. You'll build and operate evaluation systems that support confident feature delivery, and you'll work with AI coding agents—converting requirements into testable specifications, decomposing work into agent-sized tasks, and reviewing output for correctness and maintainability.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and operating advanced optimization models in production environments
- Building automated evaluation frameworks to test model behavior
- Specifying requirements precisely and directing AI coding agents to implement solutions
- Owning quality, safety, and reliability in production (deployments, monitoring, alerting, incident response)
- Delivering as a forward-deployed engineer, working closely with customers to understand business requirements and influence product roadmap
- Collaborating across product, design, and engineering teams to define success criteria and communicate capability and risk
This is an opportunity to shape how AI agents are leveraged within engineering workflows while maintaining ownership of correctness and performance regardless of whether code is human- or agent-authored.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of related experience with a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or related technical field (advanced degrees or certifications, especially in Operations Research, are a bonus)
- Strong software engineering fundamentals: OOP, data structures, algorithms, system design, concurrency, parallelism, APIs, data modeling, and testing
- Python experience strongly preferred; Java, JavaScript, Kubernetes, or GraphQL experience is a bonus
- Demonstrated comfort working directly with customers under incomplete information and fixed timelines, with judgment about fast local solutions vs. durable approaches
- Proven experience developing reliable and resilient mission-critical systems
- Strong critical thinking and track record of integrating AI into engineering processes, SDLC, workflows, or decision-making
- Familiarity with Operations Research, Vehicle Routing Problems, Mathematical Optimization, or Field Service Management is a plus but not required
