TRM Labs is seeking a Senior Legal Counsel, Product to serve as a primary legal partner for the Product and Engineering organizations. You will advise on the legal implications of product decisions from conception through launch, with particular focus on how TRM collects, uses, and delivers blockchain data and builds AI-powered features.
This is a high-autonomy, high-impact role at the intersection of legal, product, and business strategy. You will report to the Assistant General Counsel and be embedded in the product development lifecycle—attending roadmap reviews, spec discussions, and launch-readiness processes while working directly with Product Managers, Engineers, Data Scientists, and GTM teams. You are expected to operate independently, exercise sound judgment under ambiguity, and translate legal requirements into practical guidance teams can execute.
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as legal partner to Product and Engineering, advising on legal implications of product decisions across TRM's portfolio
- Advise Blockchain Intelligence and Data teams on data collection methods, sourcing, licensing, and permissible use of first- and third-party data
- Counsel on development and deployment of AI/ML features, including model training, data inputs/outputs, transparency, and emerging AI regulatory requirements
- Advise on intellectual property matters relevant to products, including ownership, licensing, and open-source use
- Draft and refine product-facing legal terms including terms of service, acceptable use policies, data terms, and customer-facing documentation
- Partner with Privacy Counsel on privacy and data-protection implications of product specs, technical architectures, and data flows
- Identify legal and regulatory risks in proposed features and recommend practical mitigations that preserve product momentum
- Build scalable legal frameworks, playbooks, and self-service resources enabling Product and Engineering teams to move quickly with legal clarity
- Collaborate with Legal team on regulatory matters, commercial agreements, and special projects
TRM processes sensitive data across dozens of jurisdictions on behalf of governments, financial institutions, and crypto businesses. Product legal questions around data sourcing, AI/ML, intellectual property, and novel regulatory frameworks are novel, high-stakes, and consequential.
Success in the first 90 days means having firm command of TRM's product portfolio, data flows, and existing legal posture, plus built relationships with Product and Engineering leads and proactive participation in product development conversations. Within six months, you will be the trusted go-to legal partner for the product organization, having established scalable frameworks that let teams move quickly with legal clarity.

REQUIREMENTS:
- J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school and active bar membership in good standing of at least one U.S. state bar
- 6–8 years of legal experience at a reputable law firm and/or in-house at a technology company, with substantial focus on product counseling
- Demonstrated experience advising Product and Engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle, ideally for data-intensive or AI-powered products
- Working knowledge of legal issues shaping technology products: data use and licensing, intellectual property, AI/ML, consumer-facing terms, and how privacy frameworks (GDPR, CCPA/CPRA) intersect with product decisions
- Strong commercial instincts; understanding of business context behind legal questions and ability to give advice that helps teams make decisions, not avoid them
- Comfort operating in ambiguous, cross-jurisdictional environments where the right answer isn't always obvious; ability to manage multiple priorities and tight deadlines with minimal supervision
- Clear, direct communicator who can translate legal complexity for non-lawyer stakeholders, with executive presence to engage senior stakeholders, external partners, and outside counsel
- Comfort with AI tooling and integrating it into legal workflows
- Experience advising companies serving government or financial institution customers is a plus
- Familiarity with blockchain, cryptocurrency, or fintech is a plus but not required
