Atoms is building Physical AI—real-world robots for industries including food, mining, and transport. This Senior Harness Engineer role owns the complete lifecycle of wire harnesses on autonomous vehicles, from electrical architecture through design, fabrication, quality assurance, and field support.
You will design wire harnesses connecting sensors, compute, power distribution, and vehicle interfaces, including circuit allocation, wire and terminal selection, connectors, seals, splices, circuit protection, grounding, and shielding. You'll produce complete harness packages with schematics, formboard drawings, pinouts, wire lists, BOMs, and manufacturing drawings, including 3D routing and length verification against vehicle models.
Responsibilities include defining routing, retention, protection, and service loops on vehicles; verifying fit, bend radius, clearance, and strain relief on first installations; building and testing prototype harnesses in-house; running first article builds and production releases with manufacturing partners; writing work instructions and inspection criteria; validating workmanship to IPC/WHMA-A-620 standards; managing harness variants across platforms and hardware revisions; owning harness issues from build floor and fleet through root cause analysis and corrective action; qualifying harness components for vehicle environments; supporting vehicle builds and bring-up; and standardizing connectors and components with electrical, mechanical, and supply chain teams.
This is a hands-on role requiring significant time in the garage, on the build floor, and at manufacturing partner facilities. You will work onsite five days per week in San Francisco with regular travel to harness manufacturers and test sites.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Aerospace Engineering, or related field (equivalent hands-on experience considered in place of degree)
- 5+ years designing and releasing wire harnesses for vehicles, aircraft, or robotic systems in automotive, autonomous vehicle, aerospace, or commercial vehicle programs, including harnesses taken from concept through production release
- Experience producing complete, buildable harness documentation (schematics, harness and formboard drawings, pinouts, wire lists, BOMs) using electrical design tools such as Capital or Zuken E3.series, with 3D routing in CATIA, NX, SolidWorks, or equivalent
- Working knowledge of wire, terminal, connector, seal, and circuit protection selection; grounding and shielding practice; sealed automotive connector systems
- Hands-on harness fabrication skills: cutting, stripping, crimping, soldering, splicing, shielding, loom and overbraid, labeling, continuity testing; ability to build and rework harnesses
- Working knowledge of IPC/WHMA-A-620 and crimp validation methods including pull testing, crimp height measurement, cross-sectioning
- Experience working with contract harness manufacturers on DFM, first articles, quality issues, and engineering changes
- Vehicle network and interface fundamentals: CAN, CAN FD, LIN, Automotive Ethernet, high-speed sensor links (GMSL, FPD-Link), including twisted pair, shield, and termination requirements
- Experience with PLM or PDM systems and engineering change processes, including effectivity and cut-in on hardware in the field
- Working knowledge of structured problem solving: 8D, 5 Whys, fishbone, FMEA
- Clear written communication for drawings, work instructions, failure reports, supplier correspondence
- Ability to work onsite five days per week; valid driver's license with clean driving record; ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work at roof level and under vehicles
