SkyWatch is a satellite data platform that democratizes access to earth observation data for businesses, researchers, and governments. The company aggregates data from multiple satellite sources and provides APIs and applications for integration into customer workflows across agriculture, infrastructure, scientific research, and defense sectors.
You will be the first dedicated engineer for SkyWatch's emerging 3D, elevation, vessel tracking, and location-based vector data product line. This is a broad, high-impact role spanning product development, integration, and application building.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own and grow the 3D product line: take over existing 3D products, ensure reliable operation, and lead development of new 3D capabilities.
- Integrate data products into customer workflows: connect products to discovery, purchasing, and publishing systems so customers can find, order, and receive data independently. Integrate upstream with third-party data and processing providers; integrate downstream into GIS platforms and marketplaces.
- Expand the data product portfolio: bring elevation, AIS vessel tracking, and location-based vector data into the product line, selecting partners and sources based on fit, quality, and cost.
- Build geospatial applications: create applications that demonstrate product value by layering 3D data with other sources (AIS, traffic, weather, GNSS) for use cases like city digital twins and planning tools.
- Package terrain for offline systems: deliver elevation products to defense and industry standards for drones, vessels, and autonomous systems operating without network connectivity.
- Own quality: ensure accuracy, coordinate systems, vertical datums, and QC are checked automatically and documented against customer specifications.
- Cross-team collaboration: support in-house image processing for other imagery sources as needed.
- Leverage AI: use AI agents to write, test, and run integration and pipeline code with automated output validation.
You are an integrator who reaches for existing capabilities before building custom solutions. You are use-case minded, understanding how city planners, GIS analysts, and defense operators use geospatial data, and you shape products around those needs. You are comfortable working across 3D, imagery, vector, and platform domains. You build complete applications, not just data files. You are AI-native and have demonstrated how AI tools have multiplied your engineering output.
Requirements:
- 6+ years as a software engineer, including 3+ years working on geospatial data, platforms, or applications.
- Production experience with cloud-native geospatial: cloud-optimized formats (COG, GeoParquet, Zarr), STAC, GDAL and rasterio or similar tools, containers, object storage, and batch or distributed compute.
- Built integrations with third-party data and processing services and delivered data into customer platforms.
- Working understanding of 3D, elevation, and vector data, including how customers use them, coordinate systems, and vertical datums.
- Built geospatial applications on 3D data using tools such as CesiumJS, ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, or deck.gl.
- Demonstrated use of AI tools to multiply your own engineering output.
- Public code or open-source contributions (strongly preferred).
- Experience producing or publishing 3D and elevation products such as surface and terrain models from stereo imagery, or I3S and 3D Tiles content in ArcGIS (strongly preferred).
- Working knowledge of OGC standards: 3D Tiles, I3S, CityGML or CityJSON, GeoPackage, OGC API Features and Tiles (preferred).
- Experience with sensor fusion and building for degraded/denied environments; knowledge of defense geospatial standards such as DTED, DGIWG, GeoPackage (preferred).
- Based in Canada and willing to undergo Government of Canada security screening (preferred).
