Axion is an AI-powered quality intelligence platform serving manufacturers in industrial, aerospace, consumer, and medtech sectors. Founded in 2021 and backed by Bessemer Venture Partners, Salesforce Ventures, Boeing, and RTX Ventures, the company is building its first Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) team.
You will be one of the first two engineers in this new function, responsible for turning customer opportunities into deployed software solutions. This is a hands-on role combining direct customer engagement with substantial engineering work. You'll work directly with customer business and technical teams to identify valuable use cases, scope requirements, and define acceptance criteria. You'll design and implement data integrations, business logic, APIs, applications, and AI-enabled workflows needed for solutions. You'll deliver usable software iteratively with tests, clear interfaces, and appropriate access controls, working with Engineering on deployment approaches.
You'll validate solutions by reconciling outputs against source data and business rules, evaluating model behavior when AI is involved, and working with users to confirm accuracy, usability, and business value. You'll monitor deployments, resolve issues, document system behavior, and establish ongoing support models. You'll also help scale the function by partnering with account teams to connect technical delivery to adoption, identifying patterns worth reusing across customers, and establishing engineering practices and delivery standards for the FDE team.
You'll report to the Head of Strategic Accounts, work alongside Solutions Directors, and have a dotted-line relationship with Engineering. The role is based in New York or San Francisco with 25–50% travel.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong software engineering fundamentals with a track record of personally shipping and maintaining production software
- Ability to work independently across backend/application logic, data models, APIs, testing, and debugging
- Comfortable reasoning about reliability, permissions, failure cases, and tradeoffs between fast releases and maintainable systems
- Proficiency in Python and SQL
- Full-stack application development experience with TypeScript/React or comparable tools
- Experience with enterprise data and API integrations
- Applied AI or agent workflows with rigorous evaluation
- Background in manufacturing, quality, reliability, supply-chain, or service operations (particularly valuable for candidates without prior FDE experience)
- Strong customer ownership mindset: ability to understand workflows, translate ambiguous problems into solutions, communicate clearly with technical and nontechnical colleagues
- Comfort operating in small teams without fully specified backlogs
- Demonstrated ability to push back constructively when a request is not the right thing to build
Note: You do not need every item on the skills list. Strong engineering judgment and demonstrated delivery are prioritized over familiarity with particular frameworks. Prior FDE title is not required; the company values what you've built and owned.
