Via is building the technology backbone for modern public transportation systems worldwide, serving hundreds of agency partners. The company transforms legacy transit networks into smart, data-driven digital systems that provide access to jobs, healthcare, and education.
As a Senior Flutter Engineer on the rider mobile team, you will own the mobile experience used by millions of riders daily. You'll be responsible for the full rider journey—from booking rides and account management to the underlying mobile infrastructure that powers the apps. You'll work across Flutter (cross-platform), native Android (Kotlin), and native iOS (Swift), collaborating closely with designers, backend engineers, and product managers who prioritize quality and scale.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and continuously improving Via's rider mobile apps across platforms, building new features for booking, account management, and core rider workflows while maintaining performance, reliability, and intuitive UX
- Working primarily in Flutter for cross-platform development while contributing to native codebases where needed, making pragmatic architectural decisions
- Architecting and evolving mobile infrastructure services, making thoughtful decisions about app architecture patterns, performance optimization, and memory management that benefit the entire team
- Diagnosing and resolving critical production issues under pressure, minimizing rider disruption and serving as a key line of defense in live environments
- Mentoring and guiding team members, sharing expertise across platforms, conducting thoughtful code reviews, and helping others grow
This is a hybrid role with the expectation of being onsite in NYC 2-3 days per week.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of mobile development experience with strong hands-on cross-platform framework experience; Flutter experience is a strong advantage, alongside solid native development in Android (Kotlin) or iOS (Swift)
- Comfortable working across both cross-platform and native codebases with good instinct for when each approach is appropriate
- Strong grasp of mobile app architecture patterns, performance optimization, and concurrent programming (Kotlin Coroutines, Swift async-await, Dart async patterns)
- Experience with mobile frameworks including Location Services and Google Maps API; familiarity with third-party mapping tools such as Mapbox
- Natural collaborator and mentor who takes ownership, shares knowledge generously, and elevates engineers around you
- Proactive and genuinely curious about new technologies; brings energy and ideas to the team
