Neros Technologies is a defense technology company designing and manufacturing high-performance unmanned systems for modern warfare. The company operates at startup speed with a culture focused on closing the gap between design and deployment, delivering capability to warfighters in months rather than years.
As a Senior Firmware Engineer on the Ground Software team, you will own the firmware that runs on ground control hardware—the equipment operators hold in the field to fly aircraft and receive telemetry. You will work across microcontroller and embedded Linux targets, taking responsibility for the latency and reliability of the operator's control path from input through transmission to the aircraft.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and maintain firmware for ground control hardware across microcontroller and embedded Linux platforms
- Own operator input handling, aircraft communication links, and telemetry/video reception on the ground side
- Ensure latency and reliability across the complete operator control path
- Define the ground-side aircraft-to-ground interface with the flight software team, including behavior during link degradation
- Bring up and debug new ground hardware in collaboration with electrical engineering
- Write unit and integration tests, partnering with the test organization on hardware-in-the-loop and field testing
You will work hands-on with real hardware in the field, moving firmware from first boot to production with minimal direction, and collaborating across teams to deliver systems that operators depend on.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong embedded C, C++, or Rust in resource-constrained environments with shipped firmware on real hardware in the field
- Real-time firmware experience: interrupts, DMA, timing budgets, and load-dependent bugs
- Hands-on board bring-up and hardware debugging with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and non-reproducible failures
- Working knowledge of embedded communication interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, USB, Ethernet)
- Track record of taking firmware from first boot to production with light direction
- Test discipline appropriate to firmware that people depend on in the field
NICE TO HAVE:
- Embedded Linux experience (building services and device interfaces; Yocto or Buildroot exposure)
- Linux networking and IP-based radio or datalink integration
- Video pipelines on embedded hardware (capture, decode, display, latency)
- RC radio or ground controller firmware experience (ExpressLRS, EdgeTX/OpenTX, or similar)
- Experience migrating products from microcontroller to embedded Linux platforms
- Personal experience flying FPV, RC, or drones
