Honeycomb is an observability platform helping engineering teams understand how their software behaves in production. The Tenant team is building Honeycomb Private Cloud, a new product enabling enterprise customers to run their own Honeycomb instance within their cloud environment.
In this role, you will own the delivery and growth of Honeycomb Private Cloud—the infrastructure, tooling, and operational processes that enable enterprise customers to deploy Honeycomb in their own environments. You'll work at the customer boundary, partnering with Field Engineering, Support, and Sales on proof-of-concepts, security reviews, access negotiations, and contract requirements. You'll help the team understand when to incorporate customer feedback versus demonstrating best practices.
You'll lead across the organization, as Private Cloud depends on multiple engineering teams. You'll maintain alignment between the SaaS and Private Cloud products, ensuring that insights from Private Cloud development feed back into SaaS infrastructure improvements. You'll manage feedback loops so that each product variant makes the other better.
You'll build and develop a small, tenured, senior, high-context team. You'll remove single points of failure, hire and onboard new engineers, and scale the team as the product grows. You'll own ruthless prioritization on a small team with enormous surface area, making clear decisions about what not to do and why.
Honeycomb is a fully distributed company with 200+ employees, Series D funded, and named to Forbes' America's Best Startups in 2022 and 2023. Customers include HelloFresh, Slack, LaunchDarkly, and Vanguard.
**Requirements:**
- 1+ year as an Engineering Manager for a highly technical, senior team
- Solid track record as an engineer with demonstrated ability to influence without authority and leave things better than you found them
- Experience managing or leading a team with a real production on-call rotation; treat operational health as a core requirement
- Experience shipping and operating software in environments you don't fully control (on-prem, private cloud, BYOC, managed single-tenant); understanding of version skew, partial telemetry, and customer security constraints
- Kubernetes and AWS fluency sufficient to review designs, ask challenging questions, and be useful in incident reviews (not required to write Terraform)
- Comfort being customer-facing with enterprise buyers: security questionnaires, access models, procurement, escalations
- Ruthless prioritization skills; ability to articulate what you decided not to do and why
- Experience hiring and onboarding engineers into domains with steep learning curves
- Comfort with AI tooling and a point of view on where it helps and where it doesn't
**Bonus:**
- Familiarity with observability / OpenTelemetry
- Hands-on coding contributions and code review experience
- Background in Go, Terraform, Kafka, large-scale data infrastructure
- FedRAMP, GovCloud, or regulated-industry compliance experience
- Field-adjacent background (solutions architecture, consulting, deployment engineering)
