Patreon is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Payments team, one of the most critical parts of the business. The Payments team owns three core areas: (1) Payments Infrastructure, including bill processing, compliance, vendor integrations, and pay-in/payout methods; (2) Payments Experience, covering fan-facing checkout and creator-facing payout interfaces; and (3) Support & Internal tooling used across Patreon. The team consists of 10–12 engineers working closely with dedicated Product, Design, and Product Marketing leads. In this role, you will partner with product, operations, design, and data teams to craft a vision and roadmap for a high-quality payments product serving creators and fans. Key responsibilities include: - Setting technical direction and roadmap priorities in partnership with Product, Design, and PMM leads - Driving execution on major infrastructure initiatives (legacy billing deprecation, payments reliability, local payment methods expansion) alongside day-to-day product delivery - Championing a culture of operational excellence, improving reliability and efficiency of payments infrastructure, and maintaining guardrail metrics like Brand Trust and Total Payment Volume - Managing and growing the team through hiring, performance management, and career development - Collaborating across teams to ensure cohesive payments experiences - Making build-vs-buy and vendor partnership decisions for payment processing, compliance, and payout infrastructure - Representing Payments in cross-functional planning with Finance, Risk, Support, and GTM stakeholders Paratreon powers over 300,000 creators with $10 billion+ generated since inception, 100 million+ free memberships, and 25 million+ paid memberships. The company operates a hybrid model with two days per week in-office for office-based employees. REQUIREMENTS: - 10+ years of software engineering experience and 5+ years managing an engineering team - Direct experience with payments, billing, or financial infrastructure at scale (PCI compliance, payment processing/orchestration, chargebacks, reconciliation, or adjacent regulated-fintech domains) - Comfort owning both reliability work and new product bets in the same portfolio - Experience navigating vendor relationships and build-vs-buy decisions for critical infrastructure - Proven track record shipping high-impact, end-to-end product work in complex domains (ideally payments, fintech, or mission-critical systems) - Comfortable people managing with ability to step in hands-on when needed - Strong cross-functional partnership skills (daily work with Product, Design, Finance, Support) - Deep commitment to building high-craft user experiences for creators and fans - Experience with experimentation-driven approaches and data-informed roadmap decisions - Skilled at building healthy, trusting relationships across Product, Design, business partners, and engineering teams NICE TO HAVE: - Experience with international payments expansion (local payment methods, currency conversion, cross-border compliance) - Background in marketplace or creator-economy businesses
