Upway is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Ops & Demand engineering team within a 20-person engineering organization. The team currently has 6 engineers and 2 Product Managers (one for Ops, one for Demand) and will grow as the business scales. You will report to the VP Engineering and collaborate closely with the Chief Product Officer, Product Managers, and regional operations and commercial leaders.
Upway is redefining mobility in the circular economy, backed by world-class investors. The company operates a platform that includes internal tools for reconditioning, logistics, inventory, and customer service, as well as a Shopify-based online store.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead hiring, onboarding, coaching, performance management, and career development for the Ops & Demand engineering team
- Run team rituals and Shape Up cycle-based planning in partnership with the two Product Managers
- Guide the team through prioritization decisions, balancing roadmap work against tactical business requests
- Ensure team ownership of velocity, quality, and risk—including stability of the online store and back-office tools used daily by operations teams
- Spend time with reconditioning, logistics, customer service, and regional teams to understand bottlenecks and translate them into engineering solutions
- Partner with the Platform team and Staff Engineers on architecture, technical standards, and cross-team initiatives
- Build and execute the hiring plan with the VP Engineering; scale the team as business needs justify
- Contribute to engineering leadership strategy, organization design, and budget planning for 2027 and beyond
- Maintain technical depth to review designs, unblock engineers, and challenge solutions without being the primary individual contributor
Requirements:
- 8+ years in software engineering, including 3+ years managing engineers (ideally a team of 6–10 engineers across multiple product areas)
- Track record of delivering business results through a team in a marketplace, e-commerce, logistics, or operations-heavy environment
- Ability to work effectively with non-technical stakeholders: understand operational problems and present engineering options and trade-offs
- Experience with cycle-based planning (e.g., Shape Up) or similar methodology; proven ability to balance multiple product areas and stakeholders on a single roadmap
- Strong hiring skills: sourcing, interviewing, closing, and onboarding engineers
- Hands-on experience with a modern backend language and relational data modeling to review system designs, challenge technical choices, and identify quality risks before shipping (TypeScript/Node.js or Shopify experience is a plus)
- Sound judgment on speed versus quality; knowing when a quick fix is appropriate and when stakes demand more rigor
- Bias for action, quick learning, and long-term thinking
- Comfort in a fast-paced, changing environment
- Based in Paris or willing to relocate (French language is not required; non-French speakers are encouraged to apply)
