Imprint is a fintech company that modernizes co-branded credit card programs for major brands like Crate & Barrel, Rakuten, Booking.com, H-E-B, Fetch, and Shell. The company combines advanced payments infrastructure, intelligent underwriting, and customer data to create personalized financial experiences. Backed by top-tier VCs (Kleiner Perkins, Thrive Capital, Ribbit, Khosla Ventures), Imprint is at a defining growth moment, launching new financial products and scaling infrastructure.
As Senior Engineering Manager, you will lead a team through complex, ambiguous problems at the intersection of payments, credit, compliance, and brand strategy. You'll operate as a true cross-functional partner with product, compliance, legal, capital markets, and solutions engineering—not just aligning with product, but helping represent Engineering in strategic decisions. You'll use AI tools to investigate codebases, assess work complexity, and bring clarity to ambiguous requests, maintaining technical credibility without necessarily being on the critical path for code.
You will build and develop your team as a craft, defining roadmaps, scoping work, and managing individuals to outcomes. This role requires hands-on involvement in technical context and project management—you'll run your team end-to-end. You'll drive delivery through your team, knowing how to scope work, set priorities, and create conditions for engineers to do their best work. Your scope and autonomy will shape how your team builds, with visibility into the company's business trajectory.
Imprint's backend stack includes Go, MySQL, DynamoDB, Temporal, Kafka, Kubernetes, and AWS. Some teams are full-stack (frontend, backend, mobile); others are backend-focused. The company values clear communication, written and verbal, and the ability to operate in detail while managing ambiguity.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of engineering management experience with a track record of building, developing, and retaining strong engineering teams
- Experience managing through periods of rapid growth, ambiguity, or significant technical change, with teams emerging stronger
- Strong technical foundation as a former strong engineer, with maintained technical credibility through hands-on engagement or modern AI tools
- Experience managing Staff-level individual contributors and helping senior engineers grow into bigger roles
- Experience in complex domains: financial systems, distributed infrastructure, regulated environments, or similarly demanding technical areas
- Clear and direct communication in writing, 1:1s, executive rooms, and with engineers
- Ability to drive delivery through your team, with expertise in scoping work, setting priorities, and creating conditions for strong engineering work
- Experience using AI tools to stay close to technical work (investigating codebases, assessing feasibility, bringing clarity to asks), or genuine enthusiasm to adopt them
- Technical background can span full-stack, backend, frontend, or mobile; strong engineering leadership is the priority
