HackerRank is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the Assessment Platform team, which powers the core assessment experience for over 2,500 enterprise customers including NVIDIA, Amazon, and Microsoft. The platform enables candidates to work on real-world applications running on dedicated VMs with an online IDE, handling concurrencies of up to 100,000 simultaneous users—a significant technical challenge.
In this role, you will own the technical vision and roadmap for the assessment platform in close partnership with Product leadership. You will architect and oversee systems that reliably scale to 100k+ concurrent users, ensuring operational excellence across reliability, incident response, security, and privacy. Day-to-day, you will drive team execution using agile practices, own delivery commitments, and build a high-performing, growth-oriented engineering team.
Key responsibilities include:
- Defining and owning the assessment platform vision and roadmap in collaboration with Product
- Architecting systems that handle extreme scale and reliability requirements
- Managing team execution, delivery commitments, and agile practices
- Ensuring operational excellence: reliability, incident response, security, and privacy
- Hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers; establishing clear career paths
- Guiding the team's adoption of AI tools to improve development quality and speed
- Cross-functional partnership with Product, Infrastructure, and Security teams
You will thrive in this role if you balance hands-on technical contributions with people leadership, think strategically about long-term platform scalability while delivering short-term results, and take end-to-end ownership from roadmap definition through execution and team growth.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 8+ years of software development experience, including 3+ years leading engineering teams
- Strong experience designing highly available, scalable, fault-tolerant, secure distributed systems and large-scale web services
- Strong technical leadership with ability to drive critical architecture discussions
- Proven track record hiring, leading, and mentoring technical teams and managing stakeholder expectations
- Hands-on proficiency in at least one of: Go, Python, Ruby, or Node.js
- Strong hands-on proficiency in at least one of: AWS or GCP
- Clear communicator who thrives in fast-paced, evolving environments
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience building or scaling cloud IDEs, remote dev environments, or online coding platforms with a developer-first mindset
- Hands-on depth in containers, Kubernetes, and on-demand VM or sandboxed compute at scale
- Track record of load testing, autoscaling, and capacity planning for spiky, event-driven traffic
- Experience driving AI-assisted development practices across an engineering team
