Salary: USD 253,895 - 298,700 / annual
Coinbase is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the AI Foundations team, which builds shared infrastructure enabling teams across the company to use AI securely, reliably, and cost-effectively. The AI Foundations platform includes the LLM Gateway and model routing, MCP Gateway for agent access to tools, knowledge and context services, evaluation infrastructure, and AI discovery and spend tooling. These building blocks power employee productivity and AI-enabled products without requiring each team to rebuild the same infrastructure.
In this role, you will lead the AI Foundations engineering organization with full responsibility for hiring, coaching, technical direction, prioritization, and delivery across shared AI services. You will partner closely with Product and senior engineers to balance rapid model and agent innovation with reliability, security, developer experience, and cost efficiency. You will own the engineering-side vendor relationships and operational readiness, and partner with Security, Legal, and Finance on AI governance and spend controls.
Key responsibilities include owning the "Neutral Foundations" pillar of Coinbase's AI Tooling Strategy and establishing a 2027 strategy and roadmap for the team. You will drive operational excellence of AI primitives and services, deliver the LLM Gateway and MCP Gateway, pave the road for model routing and evaluations, and grow the next rung of leadership within AI Foundations.
Coinbase is a remote-first (but not remote-only) company. Expect to participate in quarterly in-person working sessions called "surges" for intense collaborative work.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven experience leading engineering teams with responsibility for hiring, coaching, and technical direction
- Strong background in AI/ML infrastructure, LLM systems, or related distributed systems
- Experience balancing innovation velocity with reliability, security, and cost considerations
- Ability to partner effectively across Product, Security, Legal, and Finance functions
- Track record of establishing technical strategy and roadmaps
- Capability to develop and mentor the next generation of engineering leaders
