Xero is seeking a Senior Engineer to own the Salesforce Platform, which powers go-to-market solutions and increasingly serves as core infrastructure for AI agents. This is a hands-on individual contributor role focused on platform engineering, security, and operational excellence.
You will spend most of your time writing and reviewing code, participating in design reviews, responding to incidents, and building proofs of concept. The platform currently operates at 99.95% uptime with 100% path-to-production compliance, zero Sev 1/2 incidents, and 150–200 deployments per month. You'll help maintain these standards as the platform scales significantly.
The Platform team sits within Customer Platforms, the engineering group behind Xero's go-to-market and customer experience technology. You'll collaborate closely with engineering leaders across Security, Data, and AI, and work with colleagues across Australia, New Zealand, and offshore partners.
Current team priorities include:
- Platform security: access control, Connected Apps governance, vulnerability remediation, and making security the default
- CI/CD and release engineering: championing automation so every engineer can ship safely and quickly
- Observability and operational health: growing observability, managing org limits, and preventing customer-facing issues
- Agent path-to-production: building a safe route from idea to production for agentic changes, including evaluation baselines, agent registry, and shared standards (a new area with no established playbook)
The role is based in Melbourne with an expectation of one day per week in the office. You'll build trust and align people asynchronously and in writing, as the pods you support span Australia, New Zealand, and offshore locations.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Hands-on Salesforce development depth at enterprise scale, from code and reviews through production support, with a platform engineering mindset
- Experience owning CI/CD pipelines and release engineering across major release cycles, with GitHub, SFDX, and test automation expertise
- Track record securing platforms that other teams depend on; ability to turn post-incident reviews into lasting change
- Ability to make code and design decisions across multiple teams; experience writing RFCs and design docs that build alignment through persuasion
- Demonstrated ability to help senior engineers grow through code review standards; fluent use of AI tooling with evolving practice
- Ability to translate business goals into technical plans with Product; comfortable pushing back on unclear scope
