Standard Bots is building AI-powered robotic systems to make real-world automation accessible. This Senior Electrical Engineer role owns the electronics design and validation for critical robot subsystems including motor controllers, power distribution, compute, camera, battery management, and sensing boards.
You will take designs from concept through production release, working hands-on in a fully equipped electronics lab located on the manufacturing floor in Glen Cove. The role is 5 days/week on-site and involves roughly 60% design work (architecture, schematics, PCB layout) and 40% lab, integration, and manufacturing support (bring-up, debugging, vendor management, production issue resolution).
Key responsibilities include:
- Own PCBA design and validation for critical robot subsystems from concept to production release
- Drive architecture and component decisions through conceptual design, requirements definition, and trade studies
- Execute hands-on technical work: schematic capture, multi-layer PCB layout (high-current power, high-speed digital), board bring-up, test planning, and lab debugging
- Lead design reviews and maintain component library, release processes, and design checklists
- Serve as primary technical contact for PCB fabrication and assembly vendors; drive DFM/DFA feedback
- Mentor and advise associate and mid-level engineers
You'll partner closely with Mechanical, Software, and Functional Safety engineers to ship hardware that is simple, reliable, and manufacturable at scale.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- 5+ years designing, building, and testing PCBAs, including designs taken through production release
- Mastery of power electronics (motor drivers, inverter stages, switch-mode supplies, power sequencing, protection)
- Deep digital electronics knowledge (MCUs, FPGAs, Ethernet, USB, SPI/I2C/UART, signal-integrity fundamentals)
- Strong analog electronics skills (op-amps, filters, ADC/DAC signal chains, precision sensing)
- Proficiency in Altium Designer or similar EDA tools for schematic capture and multi-layer layout, including constraint-driven routing for high-speed and high-current designs
- Hardware debugging expertise with oscilloscope, logic/protocol analyzer, and bench instruments
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Impact-driven mindset prioritizing reliability, manufacturability, and velocity over technical idealism
- Ability to thrive in dynamic, ambitious environments with diverse teams
Bonus qualifications:
- High-speed design experience (PCIe Gen1–5, USB3/4, MIPI, GMSL, 10G Ethernet) with signal and power integrity knowledge
- Camera electronics and image sensor integration (MIPI, GMSL)
- Dense or space-constrained board design (HDI, flex, rigid-flex)
- Motor electromagnetic design and motor control (FOC, current sensing, encoder interfaces)
- Embedded programming of DSPs, MCUs, FPGAs; LTspice and Python experience
- EMC/EMI design and regulatory compliance (CE/UL, IEC 61000 series)
- Real-time industrial fieldbus experience (EtherCAT, CAN/CANopen, EtherNet/IP)
- Safety-rated electronics to ISO 13849 or IEC 61508
- NPI and volume manufacturing experience (DFM/DFT, test fixtures, yield improvement)
