Red 6 is an augmented reality startup developing synthetic air combat training systems for military pilots. The ATARS product overlays realistic 3D adversaries, wingmen, terrain, and support aircraft into pilots' actual views during real flight, replacing costly legacy training methods with immersive, repeatable, scalable preparation. As a Senior Electrical Engineer, you will own the electrical design and lifecycle of next-generation airborne AR hardware. Your responsibilities include: - Designing complex electrical systems for real-time, mission-critical airborne platforms, including power distribution, FPGA implementations, high-speed communication buses, and embedded computing architectures. - Developing dense PCBA designs integrating CPUs, MPUs, GPUs, displays, sensors, and fiber optic communications. - Defining electrical interfaces, power architectures, integration strategies, and flex circuit designs. - Conducting trade studies, design reviews, root cause analysis, and performance analysis to transform engineering challenges into manufacturable solutions. - Testing and validation to ensure designs meet performance, quality, and reliability requirements across the full product lifecycle—from requirements and prototyping through qualification, manufacturing, and flight deployment. - Collaborating with cross-functional teams of engineers and program staff to establish and improve electrical engineering standards and best practices. - Planning, tracking, and communicating design work against cost and schedule constraints. - Presenting technical work, training team members, and leading design reviews. This role is distinctive because your technical decisions carry real weight in shaping next-generation hardware; your work directly improves warfighter preparation for real-world missions; and your designs fly on actual military aircraft, built with startup velocity and defense-grade rigor. You'll be part of a growing company positioned to lead the industry in synthetic training technology. REQUIREMENTS: - Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical field. - Minimum 5+ years developing complex electrical systems for aerospace, defense, or other high-reliability applications (or equivalent education/experience mix). - Experience with complex airborne or mission-critical systems. - Deep end-to-end expertise in dense PCBA design utilizing CPUs, MPUs, GPUs, displays, sensors, and fiber optic communications. - Hands-on experience defining electrical interfaces, power architectures, integration strategies, PCBA and flex circuit designs. - Demonstrated ability to conduct trade studies, design reviews, root cause analysis, performance analysis, and produce documentation to solve tough engineering problems. - Practical lab skills with oscilloscopes, power supplies, and spectrum analyzers. - Ability to plan, track, and communicate design work against cost and schedule. - Strong communication and collaboration skills; comfortable presenting, training, and leading design reviews. - U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance. IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS: - Hands-on military flight hardware development experience, including qualification, airworthiness certification, and flight deployment on military aircraft. - Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering. - Experience with FPGAs, SoCs, SOMs, GPUs, displays, sensors, and test systems. - Test software programming and data analysis capabilities. - PCBA design and circuit simulation experience with Altium. - High-speed design expertise with DDR3/DDR4, PCIe 3.0/4.0, DisplayPort, USB 3.0, Ethernet, VPX, and rugged computing systems. - Knowledge of avionics protocols: MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429, CAN, or other deterministic architectures. - Experience with troubleshooting, root cause analysis, DFMEA, risk assessment, and performance analyses. - Design experience with military environmental and safety standards (MIL-STD-461 for EMI/EMC, MIL-STD-810 for environments). - Systems engineering and ISO/IEEE 15288 product development lifecycle experience. - Ability to work independently or integrated with diverse cross-functional teams. - Sense of urgency, confidence, and personal commitment to on-time, high-quality delivery.
