Salary: USD 170,000 - 225,000 / annual
Outpost is an orbital logistics company building reusable Earth-return vehicles (CarryAll) that enable in-space manufacturing, on-orbit warehousing, and rapid global delivery. The CarryAll family returns payloads from 200 kg to 10 metric tons, lands within 10 meters of target, and can be refurbished and reflown multiple times. The company has validated demand through defense and civil agreements with a growing pipeline of government and commercial customers.
The Senior Dynamics and Loads Engineer will own the development of loads, structural dynamics, and multibody dynamics analyses for CarryAll across its complete mission envelope: launch, separation, heatshield deployment, hypersonic reentry, descent, landing, and refurbishment for reflight. Unlike traditional space vehicles that survive one mission, CarryAll must survive the round trip repeatedly, creating unique dynamic challenges.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and own vehicle loads, structural dynamics, and multibody dynamics analyses from early architecture through hardware realization
- Define and mature environmental load cases and dynamic environments across the full mission profile, including transient events
- Partner with hardware-responsible engineers to translate analysis results into design requirements, sizing inputs, interface loads, and architecture decisions
- Support structural dynamics modeling including modal characterization, transient response, and dynamic load prediction for flight hardware
- Drive dynamic trade studies to evaluate mechanism architecture, deployment performance, and structural response under uncertain design conditions
- Develop multi-mission load spectra and support fatigue and durability assessments that define refurbishment intervals and reflight limits
- Define test objectives, instrumentation needs, and correlation plans for mechanism, structural, and dynamic development tests
- Correlate simulation results to test and flight data; refine models, assumptions, and design recommendations based on hardware learnings
- Present analysis progress, technical risks, and recommended paths forward in design reviews and cross-functional forums
- Operate effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous development environment, balancing model fidelity, engineering judgment, and schedule needs
Location: Playa Vista, California, in-person, five days per week.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or related field
- 5+ years of professional experience in loads, structural dynamics, or multibody dynamics analysis (specific details omitted in excerpt)
- U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status required; must be eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. (ITAR/export control compliance)
