Alpaca is a US-headquartered global leader in agent-first brokerage infrastructure serving stocks, ETFs, options, crypto, fixed income, and 24/5 trading. The company operates as a licensed financial services provider with institutional-grade APIs serving hundreds of financial institutions across 40 countries, totaling over 10 million brokerage accounts. Backed by $400 million in funding from top-tier investors including Portage Ventures, Spark Capital, and Y Combinator, Alpaca operates a globally distributed team of 400+ members.
As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will design, build, and operate the platforms behind software delivery, edge and L7 networking, platform access, and observability infrastructure. This role serves as the team's presence in the APAC region, supporting and owning platform systems in your timezone within a follow-the-sun operational model.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supporting engineers building on the platform through troubleshooting, advisory, and participation in support rotations during APAC hours
- Participating in a follow-the-sun on-call model: watching and triaging alerts, joining incidents, leading structured debugging, and driving blameless post-mortems
- Owning the change-to-production path using GitHub Actions, Argo CD, and Helm across multiple clusters and regions
- Running high-traffic edge and API gateway infrastructure serving hundreds of millions of requests daily globally
- Operating internal tooling (Grafana, Sentry, Teleport, Metabase, Atlantis) as production services with real users
- Advancing platform-as-a-product by building self-serve capabilities and paved paths for engineering teams
- Carrying improvement projects end-to-end from problem identification through production deployment
The role emphasizes judgment, delivery thinking, understanding business priorities, and carrying work across quarters to high standards with minimal supervision. Success requires choosing simple solutions over easy ones and thinking in terms of the request path.
REQUIREMENTS (Must-Haves):
- 5+ years in DevOps, Platform/Infrastructure, or SRE roles with proven track record operating large-scale, high-availability, high-performance production systems
- Track record of carrying multi-quarter platform work end-to-end in complex environments running multiple Kubernetes clusters
- Deep production Kubernetes experience across multiple clusters including upgrades, debugging, operational ownership, and workload packaging/deployment with Helm
- Strong Infrastructure-as-Code skills with Terraform, structuring codebases across multiple environments, with GitOps as first principle and least-privilege as default mindset
- Proven experience building and owning CI/CD pipelines at scale (e.g., GitHub Actions) including releases deploying to multiple production locations
- GitOps continuous delivery experience with Argo CD or comparable tool
- Working production experience on Google Cloud, ideally GKE, with day-to-day operational fluency (no need for landing zone/cloud topology design)
- Solid L7 networking fundamentals (load balancing, DNS, TLS, HTTP routing) and comfort debugging request paths from edge to workload
- Platform-as-a-Product mindset treating infrastructure as products with real users
- Ability and willingness to participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotation from APAC or EMEA hours and work effectively in distributed, async-first teams with strong written communication
BONUS QUALIFICATIONS:
- Policy-as-code and IaC quality tooling (OPA/Conftest, Checkov, tflint, Atlantis)
- Experience managing Terraform state, module registries, and versioning at scale across teams
- Running secret management at scale (HashiCorp Vault, OpenBao) as a service
- Internal PKI and certificate lifecycle management (private CAs, mTLS)
- Building self-serve developer platforms and internal golden paths (Backstage, Tilt)
- Production experience on Azure alongside GCP
- Working proficiency in Go for automation and tooling
- Strong Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) and container (Docker/containerd) fundamentals
- Security and compliance experience in regulated environments (SOC 2, audit logging)
- Familiarity with trading, brokerage, or regulated fintech domains
