Salary: USD 127,600 - 216,900 / annual
ServiceNow's SWAT (Software Action Team) is seeking a Senior Database Engineer to ensure production stability of customer applications and infrastructure services. You will be a subject matter expert in production database troubleshooting, ServiceNow instance performance analysis, and Linux performance tuning across on-premises and cloud environments.
In this role, you will own complex incident root cause analysis across multi-tenant PostgreSQL and MariaDB fleets at scale, develop observability and automation to prevent recurrence of critical issues, influence infrastructure decisions that shape the multi-tenant cloud platform, and mentor engineers across operations, support, and development teams. This position includes on-call rotation responsibilities and offers direct influence on the organization and all customers in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
You will support infrastructure by learning the ServiceNow platform end-to-end, working with distributed systems running under dynamic, real-world loads. The role emphasizes chasing and resolving complex issues in large-scale production environments.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of experience supporting or testing large-scale web-based distributed applications
- 5+ years of experience with multiple relational databases, especially PostgreSQL
- Deep database knowledge including MVCC, transaction management, vacuum mechanics, database and query performance tuning, buffer management, WAL architecture, backup/restore
- 5+ years of hands-on experience with SaaS, PaaS, or Cloud Infrastructure products
- Strong Unix/Linux skills: development, navigation, file manipulation, permissions, searching, administrative actions
- Bachelor's degree with 5 years related experience; or Master's degree with 3 years; or PhD; or equivalent work experience
- Experience leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with aptitude for learning new technologies
- Eagerness to learn the ServiceNow Platform
DESIRED SKILLS:
- Experience with ServiceNow platform, scripting, tuning, and troubleshooting
- Scripting: shell, Python, Javascript, Ansible
- Understanding of schemas, table spaces, indexing, and database performance optimization
- Familiarity with CentOS/RedHat operating systems
- Formal experience on DevOps (Kubernetes, CI/CD), Performance, or Support teams for web-based applications
