Toi Labs builds AI-powered smart toilet seats (TrueLoo®) that monitor in-home health by optically analyzing waste to detect dehydration, GI bleeding, UTI risk, constipation, and other signals—without requiring behavior change. The product is deployed in senior living communities and has been recognized by TIME as one of the Best Inventions. The company is backed by leading bathroom-fixture manufacturers and the NIH.
In this role, you will own the entire cloud platform: AWS infrastructure, data pipelines, and integrations connecting TrueLoo® devices to customer systems, internal tools, and external partners. You'll be responsible for the reliability, security, and connectivity of the data flow from devices in the field through cloud processing into datasets for ML training, care-staff alerts, and external systems. This is a high-autonomy position on a small team reporting to the Software (ML and Firmware) Lead.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, build, and operate AWS infrastructure and backend services using infrastructure-as-code
- Own CI/CD, observability, alerting, and on-call operations; lead incident response
- Build and maintain data pipelines moving device images and telemetry from the field into AWS and Snowflake for analysis, ML datasets, and customer-facing alerts
- Create integrations with external systems (customer EHR/EMR, care-management platforms, partner APIs) and internal tools
- Manage fleet health from the cloud: device provisioning, software releases via fleet-management platform, remote diagnostics, and handling offline devices on uncontrolled networks
- Implement security, access control, and audit discipline for a system handling health data; contribute to clinical documentation and FDA pathway support
This is a high-ownership role where you decide how the system works end-to-end, not a ticket-taker position. You'll work at the intersection of hardware, AI, machine learning, and clinical outcomes on a product that measurably improves care for older adults.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of professional experience building and operating production cloud systems (AWS preferred)
- 5+ years writing production Python: services, APIs, and data pipelines (not just scripts)
- Strong DevOps fundamentals: CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, alerting, and real on-call experience
- Experience building and maintaining integrations with third-party systems and APIs, including retries, idempotency, and handling messy data
- Solid grounding in networking and security practices
- Production experience with PostgreSQL or comparable OLTP database
- Track record of owning projects end-to-end without close supervision and picking up unfamiliar technology quickly
- Clear written communication (most coordination is asynchronous)
- Genuine interest in health technology and comfort with early-stage pace and ambiguity
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience as first or only infrastructure engineer at a startup
- Healthcare interoperability: HL7, FHIR, or EHR integrations
- Regulated environments: HIPAA, SOC 2, medical devices, FDA design controls, IEC 62304
- Data warehousing and modeling: Snowflake, dbt
- Event streaming and queues: Kafka, Kinesis, SQS
- Managing connected devices in the field: provisioning, OTA updates, remote diagnostics
- Image or video data pipelines
