Commonwealth Fusion Systems is seeking a Senior CAD Application Engineer to develop tools and processes that leverage CAD NX and Teamcenter (TC) data to drive development, feed analysis tools, and control systems. This role combines mechanical design expertise with software development to support the company's mission of delivering commercially viable fusion energy.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver complete mechanical designs including tolerance stacks, coordinate CTE/structural analysis, and assembly procedures
- Develop CAD design and software workflows that convert parametric models from NX CAD geometry into formats usable by engineering teams and control systems within analysis algorithms
- Develop software automation tools enabling users to interact with NX data from Python
- Develop software tooling for integrating NX model parameters, coordinate systems, and geometry into existing scientific software
- Utilize NXOpen API to enable coordinate transformations and provide single source of truth access
- Develop software tooling to ensure CAD designs and documentation comply with industry and internal standards
- Work as part of a matrix organization within the CAD Team, reporting to a CAD Team Leader/Manager
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams of scientists and engineers to support functional teams

Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or STEM-related field
- 10+ years of industry experience
- 5+ years of experience as a design engineer of mechanical, electro-mechanical, or thermal-mechanical systems
- 10+ years of experience with Siemens NX and Teamcenter
- Experienced with engineering release workflows and PLM tools
- Proven ability to extract key data using software automations for NX and TC
- Proficiency with GD&T per ASME Y14.100 and ASME Y14.5 standards
- Experience with Python programming, NXOpen API, Linux, Git, and Computational Geometry
- Self-motivated with strong problem-solving abilities
- Ability to perform activities such as typing and sitting for extended periods
- Dedication to safety and awareness of industrial hazards (heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead, high voltage, high current, pressure systems, cryogenics)
- Willingness to occasionally travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call
Bonus Qualifications:
- Master's degree in engineering or STEM-related field
- Experience with rigid body kinematics analysis, thermal analysis, and finite element analysis
- Background in commercialization of new technology
