Salary: USD 178,500 - 178,500 / annual
DuckDuckGo is seeking a Senior C++ Engineer to join the C++ Functional Team, working on high-performance code at the core of DuckDuckGo's browser using modern C++ and Chromium. The company is a profitable, remote-first organization of 400+ with annual revenue exceeding $100m USD, founded in 2008.
In this role, you will lead complex projects from proposal through post-mortem, turning vague problems into clear plans and executing them in a large modern C++ codebase. You'll work on projects including tracker blocking that stops hidden trackers without slowing page loads, bringing VPN and Personal Information Removal into the browser through the DuckDuckGo subscription, and catching startup and responsiveness regressions automatically to keep the browser fast as it grows.
You'll collaborate with design and product teams (mostly asynchronously) to build privacy-focused features used by millions. Some days involve low-level systems work; others involve architecture decisions that the whole team builds on. You'll use metrics to demonstrate the impact of your work and maintain ownership end-to-end.
DuckDuckGo's culture emphasizes trust, inclusivity, and empowered project management, where each team member takes full ownership of their projects. The company offers transparent compensation across the organization, with all team members at the same professional level and global region receiving equal pay.
Note: You'll be required to attend meetings on camera via video conferencing and travel at least twice yearly (all-hands meetup and team retreat, each 4-5 days). A flexible work arrangement with no core hours is offered, with an expected average full-time commitment of 40 hours per week.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 7+ years of software engineering experience
- Advanced modern C++ expertise (C++23 or newer), including memory management, concurrency, and performance profiling
- Experience driving technical work end-to-end on large-scale C++ codebases
- Ability to lead and collaborate on high-impact, complex projects from proposal through post-mortem
- Skills to wrangle vague problems, propose innovative solutions, and execute with strong focus on metrics
- Comfort with large build systems, debuggers, and profilers
- Experience shipping software to a large consumer audience
- Solid computer science foundation (algorithms and data structures)
- Bonus: Windows development experience
- Bonus: Experience with browsers (Chromium, WebKit, WebView), game engines, or large desktop applications
