Celonis is seeking a Backend Software Engineer (Java) at mid to senior level to join the Metadata Platform DB team. This team owns Postgres end-to-end—from infrastructure and provisioning to the software layer—and is responsible for maintaining and growing the database ecosystem that powers Celonis's Enterprise AI platform.
The Metadata Platform DB team manages Postgres provisioning and infrastructure as code, along with Java and Rust components built around it, including a core client library, a database proxy, a schema management tool, and a fork of an open-source sharding solution.
You will take ownership of one or more Java components within the Postgres ecosystem, including newly onboarded ones. You'll work alongside the infrastructure-as-code side of the stack (Terraform, operators) to understand how your components are provisioned and operated. Your responsibilities include improving reliability, performance, and security of the components you own; maintaining forks of open-source projects by tracking upstream changes and making deliberate decisions about merging versus diverging; collaborating with teams handing off components and with downstream consumers; and documenting processes, concepts, and decisions as ownership transitions and components evolve.
The tech stack includes Java and Postgres as core technologies, Terraform and Go-based operators for infrastructure as code, Rust for systems components (database proxy), Kubernetes for containerization, and Kustomize, GitHub CI, ArgoCD/Kargo, and Datadog for DevOps and observability. The platform is cloud-native, expanding beyond current AWS and Azure dependencies toward provider-agnostic deployment.
Celonis offers ownership from day one with Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) and merit-based refresh grants, inclusive parental leave (24 weeks fully paid for primary carers, 12 weeks for supporting carers from day one), unlimited PTO in applicable regions, flexible hybrid work, continuous learning through a 70-20-10 framework and mentorship programs, subsidized wellness memberships, and paid Impact Days for volunteering.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Solid professional experience building Java applications: 3+ years for mid-level, 7+ years for senior
- Experience with infrastructure and IaC concepts; comfort working with or alongside Terraform or similar provisioning tooling
- Experience building, packaging, and debugging applications in containerized and Kubernetes environments (Docker/OCI)
- Experience with databases (Postgres preferred, with good grasp of Postgres MVCC and concurrency mechanics from an application perspective) and distributed systems
- Experience writing and maintaining unit and integration tests
- Strong English communication skills and passion for clean, maintainable code
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with Rust or Go
- Experience maintaining a fork of an open-source project
- Hands-on Terraform experience
- Experience with monitoring and log analysis tools (e.g., Datadog)
- Familiarity with agentic coding tools (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Codex)
