CAIS is a fintech platform democratizing access to alternative investments for independent financial advisors. The company serves over 2,500 wealth management firms representing 65,000+ financial advisors managing approximately $8.5 trillion in end-client assets. CAIS provides a broad selection of alternative investment strategies including hedge funds, private equity, private credit, real estate, digital assets, and structured notes, alongside industry-leading technology and operational solutions. You will join the Capital Markets technology team as a Senior Backend Product Engineer in a hybrid, hands-on role based in London (2-3 days per week in the Old Street office, N1 7LB). You'll design, build, and run systems across Pre-Trade, Trade, and Post-Trade workflows, covering Structured Investments, Equity IPOs, Hedging & Monetization, ETFs, and related domains. The role emphasizes "product" engineering: you'll work alongside product managers and directly with the business to turn open-ended problems into working software. AI is central to the team's approach—the team uses AI throughout the development lifecycle and has already shipped agentic features. You'll help build the next generation of AI-powered capabilities. You'll work in small, autonomous teams using Kanban principles to optimize flow and limit work-in-progress. Engineers own their work end-to-end, from shaping the problem through running it in production. While QA expertise is available, quality is everyone's responsibility, including testing. The team collaborates closely with colleagues and stakeholders in New York. Tech stack: primarily Kotlin with Spring (Boot, Data, Security), PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, Kafka, Kubernetes on AWS, deployed via GitHub and ArgoCD. The codebase is modern, built in recent years after moving off legacy systems. Key appeals: real ownership in shaping problems (not just picking up tickets), visible impact on a fast-growing business, complex real-world domain problems, strong engineering fundamentals and high standards, and a modern codebase. **Requirements:** - Experience working as a software developer with Java or Kotlin server-side applications - Track record of turning business problems into working software with clear, measurable impact - Experience building and running mission-critical services in production, including CI/CD, monitoring, alerting, and incident response - Strong testing habits across unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, with good judgment about testing strategy at each level - Strong experience with Spring (Boot, Data, Security), relational database design, REST API design, and Kafka or similar event streaming platforms - Experience working AI-first: using AI agents to build software, with understanding of how LLMs work and good judgment about when to trust their output - Technical leadership within your team, including mentoring less experienced engineers and setting/sharing engineering standards - Clear communication, including explaining technical decisions to non-engineers **Nice to have:** - Financial services experience, ideally capital markets - Elasticsearch, Kubernetes, PostgreSQL, AWS, Terraform - TypeScript and React, and/or motivation to try full-stack development - Experience building AI or agentic applications
