GitLab is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Tenant Controls team within Production Engineering. Tenant Controls owns application-level rate limiting on GitLab.com, building the framework that defines, counts, and observes every application rate limit across the platform. The mission is to give GitLab.com a single way to define, configure, and observe these limits, enabling operators to understand them during incidents and change them without requiring a deploy. In this role, you will design and ship moderate to complex backend features with minimal guidance, making pragmatic architectural trade-offs between modular-monolith code, shared components, and independently operated services. You'll influence team objectives and technical direction by partnering with product managers and designers to shape requirements around user needs. You'll define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness, advocating for quality, security, availability, and performance across the platform. You'll mentor associate and intermediate engineers, remove technical blockers, and improve delivery practices through code and design reviews. You'll diagnose and prevent performance and reliability issues at scale, participate in incident response, and act as a technical owner where appropriate. A key aspect of this role involves experimenting with and integrating agentic AI into production engineering workflows, evaluating its effectiveness, and coaching others on responsible use and sound judgment. You'll work in a remote-first, asynchronous environment across product, frontend, infrastructure, data, and security teams. GitLab's culture emphasizes AI as a core productivity multiplier, with all team members expected to incorporate AI into their daily workflows to drive efficiency, innovation, and impact. REQUIREMENTS: - Strong command of backend architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in complex product or service environments - Proficiency in modern backend languages (including Ruby) and deep understanding of systems programming; ability to learn and adapt rather than mastery of a single language - Experience designing or evolving modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration-safe architectures - Ability to lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear asynchronous written communication; ability to connect product needs with technical decisions and direct your own work - Experience building or operating agentic AI systems in production, including loops, tool use, and error-handling strategies that support reliability at scale (beyond prompt engineering alone) - Helpful but not required: experience with high-throughput distributed systems, concurrency or profiling, containerized production operations (Kubernetes), database performance (PostgreSQL, ClickHouse, schema evolution, partitioning), large-scale modular monoliths or event-driven systems, public technical communication, open source maintenance, or developer-focused SaaS
