Weave is a healthcare software platform serving 40,000+ customers, providing practices with tools for scheduling, payments, communication, and patient reviews. The company is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join the Payments Team, where you will lead complex, multi-team projects and drive architectural decisions for Weave's payments platform.
In this role, you will design, build, and maintain scalable backend services and APIs using Golang microservices. You'll drive technical architecture and contribute to long-term system health by anticipating scaling and maintenance needs. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and frontend teams to deliver high-impact features, participate in system design reviews, and propose robust solutions that contribute to Weave's overall engineering strategy.
You will own the quality, reliability, and observability of your code from development to production, help plan and execute projects from inception to delivery with strong ownership and outcome-orientation, and mentor peers and junior engineers by sharing knowledge and encouraging best practices. You'll participate in on-call rotation and escalation as needed, providing hands-on support during critical incidents and mentoring team members through complex production issues. You'll also establish and maintain operational excellence standards, including SLAs/SLOs, monitoring, alerting, and incident response processes for your team's services.

REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience with modern programming languages such as Golang, Java, Python, Ruby, or C# (Golang preferred or willingness to learn)
- Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and backend services
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and inter-service communication (e.g., protobufs/gRPC, REST, Kafka, Redis)
- Experience working with relational databases and SQL
- Willingness to participate in an on-call rotation with your team and take responsibility for production systems
NICE-TO-HAVES:
- Experience deploying and maintaining services in cloud environments, especially Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Comfort with Docker/Kubernetes, observability tooling (metrics, alerts, tracing), and service reliability
- Experience with protobufs/gRPC or Temporal, and experience breaking monoliths into microservices
- Thoughtfulness about technical debt and scalability
- Ability to explain complex systems to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Leadership with curiosity and commitment to elevating the team
