The Vertical Experiences team builds pet-focused features within Life360's ecosystem: pet profiles, activity timelines, care coordination, lost pet alerts, and third-party integrations. The team operates as an AI-native unit, embedding AI tools into every stage of development—spec writing, code generation, testing, incident triage, and system design.
As a Senior Backend Engineer II, you will design, build, and maintain cloud services powering Life360's connected devices. This role bridges hardware, firmware, and mobile layers, translating device signals into reliable, scalable backend systems. You'll work on high-throughput, low-latency services managing device state, telemetry ingestion, and device-driven features for millions of members.
Key responsibilities:
- Design and maintain backend services for device connectivity, telemetry ingest, health monitoring, and command/control operations
- Collaborate with firmware, mobile, and product teams to define APIs and workflows
- Deliver scalable, resilient systems in a microservices environment on AWS (EKS, Lambda, DynamoDB, SQS)
- Build and own data pipelines for high-throughput streams using Kafka or similar technologies
- Instrument services for observability, reliability, and SLO compliance
- Participate in on-call rotations and live incident response
- Write clean, testable, performant code and improve CI/CD automation
- Orchestrate AI coding agents daily for spec writing, code generation, test authoring, incident triage, PR review, and system design
The role emphasizes AI-native development: you use AI coding assistants (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot) for substantive tasks daily, maintain accountability for all shipped code, operate with meaningful leverage as a senior engineer, share effective practices with the team, and stay current with rapidly evolving tooling.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
- 5+ years building backend services in Java, Go, Python, or similar languages
- Experience with microservices architecture, RESTful API design, and distributed systems
- Strong cloud infrastructure skills (AWS preferred), container orchestration, and deployments
- Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases, caching layers, and event/streaming systems
- Comfortable collaborating across teams and articulating technical tradeoffs
- Hands-on agentic AI workflow experience
Nice-to-have:
- IoT or telematics systems experience
- Kafka, Kinesis, or other streaming platform familiarity
- High-frequency ingest systems and time-series data experience
- Observability tooling background (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry)
- SRE practices and automated testing framework knowledge
