Global Marts builds the technology behind DoorDash's own grocery and retail operations across DashMart, Wolt Market, and Deliveroo Hop. The team develops systems that decide what products stores stock, inventory purchasing decisions, vendor sourcing, warehouse execution, and customer pricing. You'll work on forecasting and replenishment systems, vendor management, warehouse execution, labor scheduling, space optimization, and pricing. The in-house forecasting platform has replaced third-party solutions and now powers production globally.
As a Senior Backend Engineer, you'll work primarily with Go or Kotlin and take end-to-end ownership of production systems and complex technical initiatives. You'll design, build, and operate backend systems supporting inventory, purchasing, warehouse operations, pricing, and fulfillment. You'll own technical solutions from problem definition and design through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and production operation. The work is data-heavy, combining software engineering with forecasting, optimization, and operational decision-making. You'll turn complex business problems into pragmatic, scalable technical solutions, make and influence architectural decisions balancing scalability, reliability, development speed, and maintainability. You'll collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, data scientists, and operations teams to shape solutions and technical direction. You'll improve reliability, observability, scalability, and operational excellence of systems you own, support and raise engineering standards through technical discussions and code reviews, and use AI-assisted development tools effectively while applying strong engineering judgment.
The team values autonomy and ownership—engineers have end-to-end responsibility for their services from design through production and on-call. Architecture and technical direction are shaped collaboratively, with senior engineers expected to contribute actively to decisions and help others arrive at strong solutions. The tech stack includes Go, Kotlin, Kafka, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Snowflake, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, gRPC, and GitHub Actions. You don't need experience with every technology; strong backend and distributed systems fundamentals and ability to learn and make sound technical decisions matter most.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Strong experience designing, building, and operating production backend systems
- Professional experience with Go, Kotlin, or another modern backend language
- Experience owning services end-to-end, including design, implementation, deployment, monitoring, reliability, and production operations
- Strong knowledge of backend and distributed systems fundamentals: APIs, databases, asynchronous processing, failure handling, testing, and observability
- Comfortable working with data-heavy systems and technologies such as Kafka, Snowflake, or similar streaming and data infrastructure
- Ability to navigate ambiguous problems, break them into actionable steps, make appropriate technical trade-offs, and deliver incrementally
- Ability to influence technical decisions beyond immediate tasks and collaborate effectively with engineers and cross-functional partners
- Clear and concise communication of technical concepts and decisions
- Effective use of AI-assisted development tools while critically evaluating generated solutions and taking full ownership of resulting code and technical decisions
- Ability to identify opportunities to use AI to improve engineering productivity while understanding where human engineering judgment remains essential
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with forecasting, optimization, scheduling, recommendation, or decisioning systems
- Background in grocery, retail, logistics, supply chain, or warehouse technology
- Experience with ERP, vendor management, procurement, or workforce management integrations
- Experience replacing third-party or legacy platforms with internally built systems
- Knowledge of high-throughput event-driven or streaming architectures
