Salary: USD 160,000 - 240,000 / annual
Nitra is building fintech and software solutions for healthcare practices, enabling doctors to manage their businesses more efficiently. The company was founded by unicorn founders and is backed by leading VCs including Andreessen Horowitz and NEA. The team includes experienced hires from American Express, Citi, PayPal, Plaid, Bloomberg, Meta, and Mastercard.
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Banking team, you will design and build core banking infrastructure and money movement capabilities that power Nitra's healthcare fintech platform. Your responsibilities include:
- Design and build core banking infrastructure including account opening, balances, statements, and backend APIs
- Build and maintain money movement capabilities across US payment rails (ACH, wires, RTP, FedNow)
- Own ledger integrity and transaction processing, including double-entry accounting, holds, idempotency, and daily reconciliation
- Integrate Nitra Business Banking with existing products (cards, BillPay, expense management, accounting)
- Build capabilities for incoming funds (insurance payouts, patient payments) to provide consolidated financial views
- Work directly with sponsor banks, payment processors, and financial partners on integrations and compliance
- Design reliable, auditable systems handling payment exceptions, settlement timing, retries, and funds availability
- Partner with product, design, and the Taipei engineering team on feature scoping and technical design
- Make foundational architecture decisions, establish engineering best practices, and mentor growing banking team
The role offers significant ownership of financial systems and the opportunity to build category-defining products in a high-growth, venture-backed company. You will work in a hybrid model (4 days office, 1 day remote) with scheduled evening overlap with the Taipei engineering team.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 5+ years of backend engineering experience with strong Node.js/TypeScript skills (or comparable backend language) and PostgreSQL proficiency
- 3+ years of production fintech experience (payments, cards, spend management, lending, banking, or financial software)
- Track record designing and building financial systems with hands-on ownership of money movement, ledgers, or transaction processing
- Strong system design skills around financial correctness, idempotency, event ordering, retries, audit trails, reconciliation, and safe backfills
- Experience integrating with third-party financial platforms (payment processors, card issuers, sponsor banks, accounting systems)
- Ability to build new products from specification through production in ambiguous environments with clear technical documentation and proactive risk identification
- Strong cross-functional communication and ability to collaborate with distributed teams
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with accounts payable automation or BillPay products
- Hands-on experience with US payment rails (ACH, NACHA, same-day ACH, wires, RTP, FedNow)
- Experience building expense management products
- Experience with banking or deposit products and banking-as-a-service platforms
- Card issuing or payment processor integration experience
- Familiarity with healthcare payments (ERA/835, lockbox, patient collections)
- Mandarin proficiency
- Experience building products from zero to one in early-stage or regulated companies
