Bentley Systems is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and operate cloud services for SYNCHRO, a cutting-edge 4D construction planning and project management suite used on major infrastructure projects worldwide. This is a genuinely senior role with significant ownership of backend architecture end-to-end—from shaping requirements with product, through design and implementation, to running services in production.
The core technical challenge centers on schedule synchronization: keeping large, densely interconnected construction schedules consistent across desktop and cloud clients with concurrent edits at scale. Construction schedules are complex graphs of tasks and dependencies, edited simultaneously by multiple users and often exchanged with external planning tools. Reconciling concurrent changes while preserving intent and maintaining reliability and performance at real-world scale is a sophisticated distributed-systems problem.
You will own significant parts of the backend architecture, make technical decisions that outlive individual features, raise engineering standards around you, and mentor other team members. The role emphasizes ownership, accountability, and care for work quality, maintainability, and long-term impact.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and build services that keep schedule data consistent across clients and cloud, handling concurrency, conflict resolution, and data integrity at scale
- Lead backend service and API design with focus on scalability, resilience, security, and maintainability
- Build and evolve cloud microservices in C# and modern .NET (10+), using ASP.NET Core and Azure platform services
- Design and optimize relational data models and queries; make deliberate choices about data access, caching, and consistency
- Operate services in production: instrumentation, monitoring, alerting, diagnosing and resolving issues
- Profile and optimize for throughput, latency, and cost; design for failure and graceful degradation
- Drive strong automated testing culture (unit, integration, contract tests) and maintain high standards in code review
- Build and improve fully automated CI/CD pipelines; follow DevOps practices from design through delivery
- Apply secure development practices: authentication, authorization, secrets management, dependency hygiene
- Mentor engineers, lead code and design reviews, and help set standards across the team
- Collaborate effectively with product managers, frontend and desktop engineers, QA, and dependent teams
Qualifications:
- Substantial professional experience (typically 5+ years) building backend systems in C#, including modern .NET (8/9/10)
- Strong experience with ASP.NET Core and designing well-structured HTTP APIs
- Proven experience designing, deploying, and operating cloud microservices in production
- Hands-on experience with a major cloud provider—Azure strongly preferred (e.g., Azure Functions, Azure Storage, Application Insights, Azure Batch)
- Experience with concurrency, data consistency, or conflict resolution in distributed systems, or clear appetite to work on it
- Strong relational database skills, including schema design and query performance—MSSQL/Azure SQL preferred
- Practical experience with data access using EF Core and/or Dapper, with clear understanding of when each fits
- Experience with message-based and event-driven architectures, and patterns such as CQRS and mediator
- Test-driven mindset and track record of building maintainable, well-tested systems
- Solid CI/CD experience and comfort owning delivery to production
- Proficiency with Git and modern branching/review workflows
- Understanding of short- and long-term implications of technical decisions, with pragmatism about refactoring vs. shipping
- Clear verbal and written communication skills, including with non-engineering stakeholders
- Self-driven mindset with ability to work independently and collaboratively, and to mentor others
Nice to Have:
- Docker and Kubernetes experience, and running containerized workloads
- PostgreSQL experience alongside SQL Server
- Applied security experience (threat modeling, secure design reviews, security standards)
- Exposure to C++ or willingness to work across C++/.NET boundary
- Azure DevOps experience
- Experience in Scrum/Agile environments at scale
