Teya is building a financial platform for local businesses across Europe, providing simple tools, thoughtful design, and human support to replace clunky legacy financial services. The company operates as a Series C fintech startup focused on serving cafés, restaurants, salons, shops, and entrepreneurs across Europe.
As a Senior Backend Engineer in the ePOS team, you will be a core technical contributor on a critical backend service supporting Teya's merchants. You'll join a small team and help raise engineering standards while mentoring other engineers through guidance, collaboration, and example.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design, develop, and maintain clean, efficient, secure, and well-tested code for critical business systems, ensuring scalability, performance, and reliability
- Take full ownership of features and projects across the entire software development lifecycle: scoping, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (product, design, data science, security, operations) to understand requirements and contribute to architecture decisions
- Build tools and integrate systems to enhance operational efficiency and scalability
- Contribute to process improvements in CI/CD and deployment pipelines
- Participate in code reviews and help elevate team output quality
- Mentor and support fellow developers in a collaborative environment
- Stay current with trends in software engineering, payments, and fintech
- Troubleshoot complex issues across systems and provide timely resolutions
- Define and promote best practices in code quality, testing, automation, and security
- Serve as a subject matter expert in key technical areas
The role is suited to engineers who can become productive quickly, work autonomously, and take ownership of both feature delivery and operational health.
Requirements:
- At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience
- Strong experience building backend systems with Java 17+ and Spring Boot
- Proven ability to design, build, and operate reliable services in production
- Experience with system design, scalable architectures, microservices, and API development
- Strong understanding of databases, data structures, performance trade-offs, and distributed systems
- Practical experience with Kafka and event-driven systems
- Strong focus on monitoring, observability, testing, and operational ownership
- Experience debugging complex issues across multiple services or systems
- Ability to work autonomously, make sound technical decisions, and become productive quickly
- Clear communication skills and ability to explain complex topics
- Collaborative approach with interest in supporting other engineers' growth
- Experience working in Agile or Scrum environments
Nice to have:
- Degree in computer science, engineering, or related field
- Previous experience in payments industry, fintech, or location/business recommendation platforms
- Cloud infrastructure experience (AWS, Kubernetes, Helm)
- Familiarity with relevant frameworks and SDKs (Laravel, Spring, Reactor)
- Knowledge of authorization systems (RBAC, ABAC, SpiceDB)
- Experience with BDD or TDD
- CI/CD pipeline experience
