Digitail is building an AI-native platform for modern veterinary care. The company is Series B stage with ~40 product and engineering staff based in Iași, Romania. Vets worldwide use Digitail from their first to last appointment of the day, and the mission is to become the platform that defines how veterinary practices operate globally.
In this Senior Backend Engineer role, you will:
- Collaborate with Product and Engineering teams to ensure solutions meet business requirements and align with company objectives
- Contribute across the entire product development lifecycle: design, development, deployment, and maintenance of new and existing features
- Design and implement AI-focused workflows and robust, scalable RESTful APIs
- Work closely with other engineers to integrate features, manage dependencies, and solve technical challenges
- Optimize application performance for production-scale environments
- Uphold engineering best practices through code reviews, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement
- Continuously learn and explore new technologies to enhance systems
You will own a meaningful part of the backend outright. When decisions need to be made, people come to you. You mentor less experienced engineers through code reviews and hands-on collaboration. You lead larger rework initiatives end-to-end—scoping, sequencing, and shipping without maintenance windows. You establish and document engineering practices that stick, and you automate manual processes the team previously caught by hand or missed entirely.
The tech stack is PHP and Laravel (organized into domains/modulith), AWS, Kubernetes with infrastructure as code, and every pull request ships with tests. Prior Laravel experience is not required; the team values how you think about systems over specific technologies used.
The role is hybrid, 3 days per week in the Iași office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Years of experience building and owning backend systems at real scale in organizations that grew
- Strong opinions about keeping complex systems clean as they scale
- Experience with systems that have real availability requirements, where downtime has material impact
- Ability to analyze slow or complex parts of live systems, form hypotheses about root causes, and explain reasoning clearly
- Strong fundamentals in system design and software engineering (specific tech stack can be learned)
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead other engineers
- Comfort with PHP/Laravel preferred but not required; strong engineers pick up the stack quickly
