Limbic is building AI-powered mental healthcare solutions deployed across the NHS and US healthcare systems. The company has supported over 820,000 patients and holds UKCA Class IIa medical device certification and FDA TEMPO pilot selection. In a Nature Medicine randomized trial, Limbic's AI agents scored higher than licensed CBT therapists on standard therapy skill measures.
As a Senior AI/ML Engineer, you will own the AI powering Limbic's clinical assessment product for US healthcare organizations. Patients describe their struggles in conversation with the AI, which gathers history, administers standard clinical questionnaires (PHQ-9, GAD-7), detects risk, and recommends treatment programs for clinician review. The system must be safe and accurate across many clinical configurations, not just one.
Key responsibilities include:
- Owning the quality of conversational AI for patient assessments, from conversation flow to clinical prediction and treatment recommendation
- Improving safety checks that screen patient messages and AI replies for risk, manipulation attempts, unsafe medical advice, and clinically inappropriate responses
- Productionizing ML models that optimize clinical prediction accuracy and speed to appropriate care
- Building and maintaining evaluation harnesses, simulated patient conversations, and labelled transcript review for pre-deployment testing
- Extending assessment AI to new channels (e.g., phone) for patients unable or unwilling to use web forms
- Turning clinical AI into composable services for healthcare partner integration
- Building agents and tooling that automate product development workflows, testing, and customer demos
- Raising engineering standards through architecture, code review, and mentorship while maintaining regulatory compliance
You will work in North American hours (Eastern time preferred) with daily overlap with the ML team in London. The role involves close collaboration with product, engineering, and clinical colleagues.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Educational and experience background (one of the following required):
* PhD in computational science or AI-related field, plus 2+ years ML engineering experience
* OR BSc/MSc, plus 4+ years ML engineering experience
- Expertise in productizing LLM features and eval-driven development
- Expert-level proficiency in Python and TypeScript/JavaScript
- Proven experience building LLM agent harnesses
- Experience with reinforcement learning
- Strong architectural skills designing scalable, production-grade ML systems
- Solid understanding of statistical principles for LLM evaluation and user activity analytics
- Proficiency with version control (Git preferred) and databases (SQL or NoSQL)
- Hands-on experience with major cloud platforms and containerization technologies
- Track record of end-to-end ownership: scoping shippable work, measuring impact, maintaining urgency
- Genuine interest in applying technical skills to mental healthcare challenges
- Ideal (not required): Experience with real-time voice AI or healthcare organizations as customers
- Must be based in Canada with right to work (no visa sponsorship available)
- North American business hours required; Eastern time preferred for daily European overlap
