Traversal is an AI Site Reliability Engineer (AI SRE) platform for enterprises, autonomously diagnosing, fixing, and preventing incidents in complex production environments. The company operates in mission-critical environments at Fortune 50 enterprises and is backed by Sequoia Capital, Kleiner Perkins, and other top-tier investors. The founding team includes researchers from MIT, Harvard, Berkeley, Columbia, and Cornell, alongside technical leaders from Google, Meta, Datadog, ServiceNow, and Citadel Securities.
As a Security Engineer, you will raise the security floor across Traversal by building AI-native security mechanisms tailored to how the company operates. This is a senior, high-impact role focused on designing and shipping secure foundations rather than compliance checkbox work. You will partner with security leadership to shape the roadmap across product, cloud, and infrastructure, owning broad-scope projects end-to-end.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing and shipping secure libraries, defaults, and workflows that make secure development the easiest path at Traversal
- Defining and implementing controls that continuously verify security properties across products and cloud infrastructure
- Building security capabilities into Traversal's products to support enterprise security teams
- Discovering, verifying, and fixing security issues while adding preventative tests and controls
- Architecting security systems for scale across SaaS and BYOC deployments
- Leading multi-phase rollouts, migrations, and deprecations with careful sequencing and de-risking
- Shipping operationally complete systems with monitoring, runbooks, and safe upgrade paths
- Setting technical direction for scoped security domains and connecting work to customer and business outcomes
- Mentoring engineers and creating patterns and libraries that enable others to extend your work
Traversal serves Fortune 50 enterprises across multi-tenant environments, BYOC deployments, and multiple compliance regimes. Your work will span application behavior, identity, infrastructure, deployment boundaries, data security, and access controls.
The company is fully in-office, 5 days a week, based in New York near Madison Square Park, with a collaborative, hard-working culture focused on building the future of AI-powered software maintenance.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 4-6+ years building or securing production software or infrastructure at technically rigorous companies or teams, including sensitive, mission-critical systems
- Proven ability to independently lead ambiguous, cross-team security projects from design through implementation, migration, and adoption with minimal structure
- Strong programming skills in Python, Rust, or Go with ability to work effectively in existing codebases
- Hands-on depth in application security or cloud security, with working knowledge of the other (gained in a security role or by owning security-critical systems as a software/infrastructure engineer)
- Technical depth in risk assessment; views standards like NIST & SOC2 as starting points, not necessarily the right baseline
- Practical understanding of authentication, authorization, trust boundaries, secrets, and common failure modes in distributed systems
- Clear written communication and collaborative approach to technical disagreements
NICE TO HAVE:
- Experience with enterprise customer security requirements
- Experience building on and securing infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform) and container orchestration systems (e.g., Kubernetes)
- Detection engineering, security telemetry, or automated control validation
- Offensive testing experience paired with shipped remediations
- Experience applying formal methods for security
