Salary: USD 110,000 - 140,000 / annual

Basecamp Research is building frontier AI for therapeutic design, combining proprietary genomic datasets (BaseData—over 10B genes from 30+ countries) with machine learning to design cell and gene therapies, enzymes, and peptides. The company recently closed a $140M Series C and has offices in London and Boston. You will join the Cambridge, MA team as Scientist I, Platform Innovation, reporting to the Head of Innovation Science. This role establishes a new platform innovation lab focused on gene editing and cellular engineering, specifically targeted cargo integration in dividing and non-dividing cells. You will work closely with Data Science and AI teams on discovery, validation, and engineering of novel gene editing tools. Key responsibilities include: - Contributing to strategy for design-build-test cycles of novel protein enzymes, with emphasis on discovery and validation of gene editing tools - Building and screening plasmid libraries; developing cloning workflows for scale - Quantifying editing outcomes using ddPCR, qPCR, flow cytometry, and NGS readouts - Optimizing hits for activity and specificity using human primary cells and cell lines - Contributing to scientific culture and establishing lab SOPs as a founding lab member - Collaborating across teams on high-throughput screening platform development Requirements: - PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, bioengineering, or related life sciences field; or MSc with equivalent hands-on laboratory experience - Experience with gene editing, NGS assay development, protein engineering, and cell therapy - Experience with high-throughput cloning methods and DNA construct production for cellular screening - Proficiency in mammalian cell culture, transfection, and cell-line generation - Knowledge of emerging gene editing technologies and on/off-target analytics for regulatory approval - Expertise with DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, ddPCR, NGS library preparation, and QC - Excellent communication skills with internal and external stakeholders Advantaged by: - Preclinical cell therapy program experience (in vivo or ex vivo) - Flow cytometry expertise with antibody panels and fluorescent reporters - Novel methods for gene editing off-target analytics using long/short-read sequencing - Mechanistic understanding of gene editing tools (nucleases, base editors, transposons, recombinases) - Experience integrating AI protein design tools with high-throughput wet lab screening - NGS instrumentation fluency and bioinformatics tools knowledge - Proactive problem-solving, adaptability, and high ownership mindset
