Oklo is seeking a Safety Analysis Engineer to support the development of the safety basis for a first-of-a-kind used nuclear fuel recycling facility. This is a hybrid role based in Santa Clara, CA, with the option to work remotely with required travel to headquarters twice quarterly.
You will play a critical role in identifying and evaluating hazards and accidents, designating Items Relied On For Safety (IROFS), and developing management measures for a cutting-edge advanced fission facility. Your work will span radiological, subcriticality, chemical, and fire safety programs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Develop and maintain safety basis documents in compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission regulations and guidance
- Support Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA), Criticality Safety Evaluations, Fire Hazard Analysis (FHA), and Natural Phenomena Hazard (NPH) analysis
- Identify and evaluate radiological, criticality, chemical, fire, and natural phenomena hazards
- Identify and evaluate accident sequences using both inductive and deductive methods
- Perform deterministic consequence severity calculations for radiological and chemical source term and dose
- Perform likelihood calculations using qualitative and semi-quantitative methods (e.g., layers of protection analysis)
- Designate IROFS for prevention and mitigation of accidents
- Develop management measures to ensure adequate availability and reliability of IROFS
Oklo is a venture-backed advanced fission company that received the first site use permit from the U.S. Department of Energy for a commercial advanced fission plant and submitted the first custom combined license application for an advanced reactor to the NRC. The company is also developing advanced fuel recycling technologies in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Energy and National Laboratories.
The ideal candidate is a startup-minded individual who thrives in fast-paced, iterative environments. You are self-motivated, an excellent communicator (both written and verbal), detail-oriented, and creative in solving open-ended technical problems. You bring enthusiasm and passion to the mission of advancing clean energy while working collaboratively as part of a team.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, or related discipline (Master's or Ph.D. highly desirable)
- 3–5 years of experience in nuclear safety, process safety, or similar high-hazard environments
- Proficiency with Hazard and Operability Study (HAZOP) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methods
Bonus Qualifications:
- NRC licensed fuel cycle facility safety basis development experience
- Consequence severity analysis using RADTRAD, MELCOR/MACCS, ARCON, and PAVAN
- Event tree and fault tree analysis
- Familiarity with NUREG-1513, NUREG-1520, NUREG-1718, and relevant regulatory frameworks
