Mach Industries, founded in 2023, is a rapidly growing defense technology company with ~350 employees focused on developing next-generation autonomous defense platforms. This role is part of a new consumer robotics program dedicated to robotic hand development.
You will own significant responsibility for solving challenges related to handling everyday objects with different shapes, weights, and textures. Working end-to-end, you'll partner closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers to turn concepts into products.
Key responsibilities include:
- Making early architecture and component decisions with safety, manufacturability, reliability, and serviceability in mind
- Owning decisions about mechanisms that determine dexterity, strength, and range of motion
- Developing and tuning hand controls so the robot can grasp securely, adjust its grip, and handle fragile or unfamiliar objects
- Championing systems integration by partnering with electrical, mechanical, and software peers to bring the complete hand system to life
- Conducting rigorous reliability testing, failure analysis, and root-cause investigations, using experiments and analysis to guide the next design
You will be expected to work extended hours and weekends as needed.
Note: This position requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency due to ITAR export control regulations. The role may require access to information protected under U.S. export control laws.
REQUIREMENTS:
Required:
- Experience designing robotic hand mechanisms and actuator control systems
- Demonstrated hands-on experience turning ideas into hardware and bridging theory and practice
- Experience taking ambiguous, open-ended problems and creating workable designs
- Intrinsic curiosity about hard problems and motivation to learn unfamiliar systems
- Ability to lead reviews, influence cross-functional teams, and communicate risks and solutions clearly
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, computer science, robotics, physics, or related engineering discipline
Preferred:
- Advanced understanding of robotic hand mechanisms, kinematics, dynamics, and motion and force control
- Experience with compact motor-transmission assemblies, tendon-driven or linkage-based fingers, force or tactile sensing, and grasp stability
- Familiarity with robotic hardware such as actuators, gearboxes, motors, bearings, and sensors
- Hands-on prototyping skills and experience troubleshooting mechanical and electromechanical systems
- Knowledge of reliability testing, failure analysis, and root-cause investigations
- Hands-on experience using structural FEA to drive design optimization, including stiffness, strength, and mass optimization
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, manufacturing processes, GD&T, and tolerance analysis
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as Onshape, SolidWorks, Creo, NX, CATIA, or similar tools
- 3+ years of experience taking robotic or electromechanical hardware from concept through validation and deployment
