HappyRobot is building infrastructure for enterprises to deploy and orchestrate AI workforces at scale. The company, backed by a16z, Y Combinator, Base10, Prysm Capital, and Eurazeo with over $150M raised, is seeking a Revenue Accounting Lead to establish the revenue accounting function from the ground up. This is a 0-to-1 role reporting to the Head of Accounting. You will design and build the monthly and quarterly revenue close process, revenue recognition workflows for platform fees, compute credits, professional services, and usage overages. Each revenue stream has distinct recognition patterns that require automation. Key responsibilities include: - Design and build the revenue close process from scratch, automating each step as it stabilizes - Identify manual, repetitive revenue tasks and systematically replace them with automation via systems or AI agents, making clear judgments about which steps require human review - Own and configure the revenue sub-ledger in the new ERP, including credit-pool breakage calculations and monthly true-ups - Partner with Sales and Deal Desk (RevOps) to review non-standard contracts, value-based pricing, and custom deal structures, ensuring proper ASC 606 treatment before signing - Own accounts receivable accounting end-to-end: reconciliations, aging, allowance for doubtful accounts, with automation where volume justifies it - Build the first revenue policy memo and technical policies, including distinct-versus-combined performance obligation analysis, audit-ready from day one The role is ideal for a finance engineer—someone who builds scalable systems to reduce manual work and increase accuracy, not just someone who processes transactions. You'll work closely with the Head of Accounting to design processes and system flows simultaneously, and you're expected to use AI finance tools (including HappyRobot's own platform) to automate tasks. REQUIREMENTS: - 4–6 years of progressive revenue accounting experience, ideally including usage-based, consumption, or SaaS revenue models - Finance engineer's mindset: you build scalable systems that reduce manual work and increase accuracy - Proven, hands-on experience using AI tools (Claude, ChatGPT, or similar) in day-to-day work, and comfort picking up new automation tools quickly - Strong judgment about which accounting activities should be automated and which require human review - Solid working knowledge of ASC 606, including performance obligation analysis and variable consideration judgment - Clear communicator who can explain revenue recognition to engineers, salespeople, and founders without jargon - Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field; CPA or progress toward CPA a plus, not required
