Cardboard is building the future of video editing, combining a real browser-based video editor with cloud media infrastructure and AI agents that understand footage. The company is backed by Tier-1 global investors, Y Combinator, and founders of billion-dollar companies.
As a React Native Engineer, you will own Cardboard's mobile experience across iOS and Android. You'll make early architectural decisions on how the app handles media, and you'll be responsible for the quality of everything shipped on both platforms. Working alongside a small, fast-moving team of engineers who care deeply about craft—including the founders—you'll solve hard problems around media handling, performance, and user experience.
Key responsibilities include:
- Building and shipping Cardboard on iOS and Android from the ground up
- Creating media-heavy interfaces that maintain 60fps or better performance with smooth gestures and animations
- Handling real phone footage: 4K HEVC, HDR, variable frame rates, and multi-gigabyte files
- Building robust uploads that work on poor networks and continue in the background
- Writing native modules in Swift and Kotlin when JavaScript isn't sufficient
- Owning problems end-to-end and shipping great solutions quickly
The team values people who notice when interactions don't feel native and fix them, who thrive in fast-moving environments with minimal process, and who set their own bar for quality. Compensation includes competitive salary and founding-team equity. The company provides unlimited access to AI model tokens, and a healthy budget for AI tools and peripherals.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Shipped and maintained React Native apps in production, ideally used by large audiences daily
- Comfortable reading and writing native iOS and Android code; able to debug native crashes, profile JS and UI threads, and diagnose frame drops
- Strong knowledge of the modern stack: TypeScript, Expo, New Architecture, Reanimated, Gesture Handler
- Strong product taste and attention to detail in interactions and feel
- Thrive in fast-moving, lightly-processed environments
- Bonus: experience with AVFoundation, MediaCodec, Skia, on-device ML, or building camera, photo, or video apps
