Ashby is hiring a QA Engineer to help test and strengthen product quality. The role emphasizes building quality into the system rather than gatekeeping it, with a focus on fast, useful feedback that engineers trust. Approximately 70% of the role is hands-on manual testing. You'll work directly with engineers and stakeholders on features as they ship, reproduce bugs reported by customers, and coordinate testing across feature areas for larger launches. The remaining 30% involves writing Playwright end-to-end tests and expanding test coverage. You don't need to be an SDET or have built a framework from scratch, but you must be comfortable writing code, reading others' code, and improving both. The team has an existing Playwright suite and page object structure you'll build on, with SDETs available to pair with you and support your growth. Ashby combines the agency and autonomy of an early-stage startup with the scale of a growth-stage company. You'll decide what to test and when, work directly with builders, and operate in a low-meeting culture. The product serves 100,000+ weekly active users with notable customers including Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake. The company has tens of millions in ARR, >100% year-over-year growth, low churn, and multiple years of runway. Your first three months involve learning the product deeply through hands-on testing of real PRs, getting familiar with the Playwright suite, and writing your first e2e tests with team support. You'll have a peer paired with you and receive 30, 60, and 90-day reviews from your manager. The tech stack includes TypeScript (frontend & backend), React, GraphQL API, Node.js, Postgres, and Redis. For QA, the team uses Playwright (TypeScript), TestRail, BrowserStack, and Postman. REQUIREMENTS: - Strong product instincts; ability to test like a user and understand the difference between "it works" and "it works the way someone would actually use it" - Good at reproducing bugs; ability to narrow down issues and file clear, specific bug reports - Self-sufficient and able to scope your own work; given a feature and spec, you decide what's worth testing and know when to ask for help - Desire to grow on the automation side; comfortable writing code and learning from engineers around you - Clear writing skills; concise, clear, and easy-to-follow communication - Comfortable writing code and reading others' code - Experience with or willingness to learn Playwright end-to-end testing - NOT a fit if you view QA as gatekeeping, prefer detailed test plans over ownership, want to stay at the surface level, are used to large QA teams with ceremony, want a pure automation/SDET role, or don't want to write code
