Hypersonica is building Europe's hypersonic defence capability. This role owns propulsion engineering for hypersonic vehicles across the full lifecycle: concept trades, design, integration, testing, and flight-proven hardware.
Key Responsibilities:
- Own propulsion system engineering from early concept through integrated, test-proven flight hardware
- Develop and maintain propulsion performance models for vehicle-level trade studies, mission analysis, and design decisions
- Define propulsion system requirements, interfaces, and margins in collaboration with Systems, Aerodynamics, Aerothermal, Structures, and GNC teams
- Lead propulsion system integration into the vehicle, managing mechanical, thermal, and electrical interfaces and their effects on vehicle performance
- Plan, execute, and analyse propulsion test campaigns from component-level through integrated system tests; work hands-on with test facilities and suppliers
- Correlate test data with models and feed results back into design and performance predictions
- Support CFD and analysis of internal flows and combustion phenomena in collaboration with simulation teams
- Manage propulsion suppliers and subcontractors technically, including specifications, design reviews, and acceptance testing
- Establish safe test operations and hazard analysis for propulsion activities with HSE and Quality teams
- Document designs, analyses, test procedures, and results for traceability and configuration control
The company emphasizes a talent-dense, autonomous environment where individuals shape the direction of work. High ownership, fast decision-making, and direct impact on European sovereign capability are core to the culture.
Requirements:
- Hands-on propulsion engineering experience taking propulsion hardware or systems through analysis, test, and integration
- Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (or related discipline); postgraduate qualification in propulsion, combustion, or thermofluids is a plus
- Strong grounding in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and propulsion system performance
- Experience planning and running propulsion or combustion tests, including instrumentation and data analysis
- Programming skills (Python or MATLAB) for performance modelling, data processing, and automation
- Experience with CFD tools (Ansys Fluent, STAR-CCM+, or similar) is an advantage
- Experience working with suppliers and test facilities in aerospace or defence programmes is a strong advantage
- Ability to make sound engineering judgements with incomplete data in fast-moving, prototype-heavy environments
