CuspAI is a frontier AI company focused on using artificial intelligence to accelerate the discovery of breakthrough materials for energy, clean water, computing, carbon capture, and other critical challenges. The company's founding team comprises world-class researchers in AI, chemistry, and engineering, and they are building an AI-powered "search engine" for next-generation materials. You will join as a Member of Technical Staff (Product Engineer) within the Platform Engineering organization. Your primary responsibility is to lead the inception and development of CuspAI's internal application suite—the foundational tools that researchers use daily to conduct their work. In this role, you will: **Product Inception & Internal Tooling** - Lead development of a suite of internal applications, treating them as first-class products with emphasis on usability and long-term scalability - Collaborate closely with the VP of Product to translate research needs into technical roadmaps and intuitive software solutions - Own the end-to-end lifecycle of internal tools, from initial architecture and backend design to frontend deployment **Full-Stack Development & Platform Integration** - Design and build robust backend services in Python to interface with core AI and research engines, integrating disparate workflows into a unified, high-performance internal platform - Partner with the Data Engineering team to ensure seamless ingestion and visualization of complex datasets within internal applications - Develop clean, responsive UIs that enable researchers to interact with complex data effectively, maintaining high usability standards for technical users **Interdisciplinary Collaboration** - Work closely with AI Researchers and Data Engineers to understand their daily tasks and build empowering tools - Collaborate with the broader engineering team to ensure internal tools align with overall infrastructure and security standards Initially, your focus will be partnering with the VP of Product to define and build the first generation of internal applications from scratch. Over time, you will scale these systems to support increasingly complex interdisciplinary data flows and potentially external-facing interfaces. The role is based in London (with flexibility to work from Cambridge, Amsterdam, or Berlin offices) with an expectation of being in the office three days per week. Regular travel to other locations may be required for collaboration and project work. **Requirements:** - Minimum 4+ years of professional experience in full-stack software engineering with a proven track record of building and maintaining production-grade applications - Strong backend expertise, specifically with Python and modern web frameworks (FastAPI, Django, or Flask) - Proficiency with Node.js and modern frontend frameworks (React, Vue, or TypeScript) with a keen eye for UI/UX best practices - "Builder" mindset who enjoys greenfield projects and is comfortable making architectural decisions from scratch - Product-focused mindset—actively thinking about how to make users' lives easier, not just executing tickets - Excitement about enabling world-changing scientific discovery (background in sciences not required) **Bonus qualifications:** - Experience in early-stage startup environments wearing multiple hats - Previous experience building internal tools, dashboards, or admin interfaces for data-heavy companies - Knowledge of modern DevOps practices and cloud infrastructure (GCP, Docker, Kubernetes) - Academic background or personal interest in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Sustainability
