Salary: USD 175,000 - 205,000 / annual
Skydio is the leading US autonomous drone company, serving defense, public safety, enterprise, and utility sectors. As a Product Design Engineer, you will architect and develop the mechanical systems that enable reliable autonomous flight. You'll design mechanical parts and assemblies for aircraft, ground stations, and accessories from concept through mass production, collaborating closely with electrical engineers to integrate custom PCBAs, flex circuits, antennas, and cable harnesses.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design mechanical parts and assemblies for aircraft, ground stations, and accessories as part of new architectures
- Collaborate with electrical engineers to integrate custom electronics and components
- Interface with and own technical activity at vendors in partnership with operations and supply chain teams
- Define and execute engineering tests and analysis to evaluate system trade-offs
- Drive designs through the full development cycle from prototyping to pre-production and mass production
- Support internal manufacturing and factory teams with assembly processes, quality criteria, and inspection standards
- Debug and investigate failures with attention to detail and root-cause analysis
Requirements:
- 3-8 years of product development experience with proven track record of execution, enthusiasm, and collaboration
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent with demonstrated academic excellence
- Strong analytical problem-solving skills and engineering fundamentals for sophisticated electromechanical systems
- Mastery of 3D CAD for complex assemblies; CATIA experience strongly preferred
- Ability to design for multiple manufacturing processes: injection molding, metal casting, CNC machining (required); sheet metal forming and composites (desired)
- Excellent prototyping skills in fast-paced environments
- Ability to produce thorough mechanical part and assembly drawings
- Passion for elegant mechanical design at all levels of detail
- Strategic mindset across design, sourcing, building, validation, and shipping
- FAA Part 107 certification strongly encouraged within first 60 days; required for certain positions
