Axle Energy is building software infrastructure for the decarbonized energy system, controlling hundreds of thousands of energy assets including vehicle charging, heating systems, and home batteries. The company operates at high speed in a legacy industry, moving gigawatt-hours of electrons in the real world, and is backed by leading investors including Accel.
As the first product designer at Axle, you will be responsible for elevating design quality across the entire organization. You'll work across a flat, autonomous structure with small interdisciplinary teams of engineers and product managers, establishing design as a core pillar alongside engineering and product.
Key responsibilities include:
- Understanding user problems and designing experiences to solve them across both B2C and B2B2C products
- Building design systems and frameworks (in Claude and code) that enable the team to ship beautiful software faster
- Deepening the company's culture of user research and understanding how people experience Axle's products
- Leading visual identity and external representation through web, animation, and video for prospects, clients, investors, and potential employees
- Working with global clients to improve their user experiences
- Providing enablement and coaching to raise design standards across the business
Axle is building cutting-edge energy products ranging from simple mass-market consumer offerings to advanced tooling for early adopters. You'll be solving new and complex problems where established answers don't exist, and customer experience is critical.
The role requires someone energized by ambiguity who takes a pragmatic, outcome-first approach. You should be excited about bringing sophisticated technology to broader audiences and willing to dive into technical details. Deep curiosity about how people experience the world and a strong aesthetic sense are essential.
Requirements:
- Proven experience as a product designer with a portfolio demonstrating strategic design thinking
- Strong aesthetic sense and understanding of what constitutes good design
- Experience with user research and user-centered design methodologies
- Ability to work across multiple product types (B2C and B2B)
- Comfort with ambiguity and pragmatic problem-solving
- Experience building design systems or design infrastructure
- Capability to work independently and mentor others in design practices
- Willingness to engage with technical implementation details
