Tonal is seeking a Principal/Architect Software Engineer to lead technical strategy and delivery across its device, app, and cloud systems. You will report to engineering leadership and own the translation of business priorities into technical direction, architecture decisions, and delivery plans with a 6–12 month horizon. Key responsibilities include: - Setting technical direction across device, app, and cloud infrastructure. Translating product priorities into architecture, ownership models, and delivery roadmaps. - Leading cross-team initiatives from problem definition through launch and adoption. Settling technical tradeoffs with team leads and flagging priority and resource conflicts early. - Writing critical-path code, building prototypes, guiding migrations, and debugging hard production issues. Owning how architecture decisions perform in practice. - Simplifying shared systems and interfaces to improve reliability, observability, security, and developer workflow, reducing coordination overhead across teams. - Mentoring senior and Staff engineers through design reviews, pair programming, and shared delivery. Establishing lightweight decision-making practices that enable teams to move independently. - Leveraging AI-assisted engineering tools to improve delivery and quality. Partnering with Data Science, AI, and platform teams on production integrations. You will stay hands-on throughout the design-to-production cycle. Success is measured by shipped outcomes, stronger systems, and teams that move faster. 90-day milestones: Set technical priorities and ship or materially de-risk one important cross-team initiative. Six-month milestones: Adoption across multiple teams with measurable gains in delivery speed, reliability, cost, or integration effort. Ongoing: Develop independent technical leaders, reduce recurring cross-team blockers, and increase engineering-leadership capacity for org priorities. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS: - Demonstrated leadership of architecture and delivery across multiple teams at Senior Staff or Principal scope, with measurable results. - Deep expertise in backend, distributed systems, and cloud infrastructure. Ability to reason across device, mobile, data, and service boundaries. - Active production software development and operations experience. Proven track record owning hard integrations or migrations and making pragmatic tradeoffs between speed, reliability, security, cost, and maintainability. - Ability to turn ambiguity into focused plans and secure alignment from technical and nontechnical stakeholders. - Track record of developing other senior engineers into stronger technical leaders and demonstrating how your work improved teams beyond your own. EXTRA CREDIT: - Experience with connected devices, consumer subscriptions, fitness, or digital health. - Healthcare integrations and sensitive-data systems. - AI in production products or engineering workflows with clear quality, delivery, or cost gains.
