Salary: USD 185,500 - 265,000 / annual
Zscaler is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the design, architecture, and development of its multi-tenant, cloud-based Intelligent Data Platform. Reporting to the Director of Software Development Engineering within the Cloud Data Platform team, you will be a technical leader responsible for shaping the platform's evolution to meet dynamic business needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading the design and architecture of a scalable, secure, high-performance multi-tenant cloud data platform
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams (product, stakeholders) to align technical strategy with business goals and contribute to product roadmap definition
- Establishing and optimizing engineering processes, agile methodologies, and best practices to enhance development efficiency and code quality
- Driving engineering and operational excellence to ensure 4-9s system availability in a full DevOps model, with focus on reliability, fault tolerance, automation, and rapid incident resolution
- Evaluating emerging cloud technologies across providers to keep the platform versatile and leading-edge
- Mentoring junior engineers and championing inclusive collaboration and technical excellence
You will operate as an owner with a bias for action, solving complex technical challenges with integrity. You balance high-level strategy with hands-on execution, collaborate with high trust, deliver results with urgency in a high-growth environment, and remain resilient and adaptable through change.
The role is hybrid, requiring a minimum of 3 days per week in the Santa Clara, CA office.
Requirements:
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, specializing in building and managing large-scale cloud-based data platforms with expertise in distributed systems and data architecture
- Foundational understanding of AI/ML technologies and experience leveraging, securing, or positioning AI-driven solutions within your functional domain
- Demonstrated experience driving cross-team technical programs to delivery, including owning design reviews, resolving cross-functional blockers, and producing clear architectural guidance
- Proficiency in Java or alternatives (Go, Python, etc.) with deep expertise in REST APIs, RDBMS, Document Stores, Kubernetes, and Docker
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (advanced degrees and industry certifications advantageous)
- Experience working with product management and cross-team stakeholders to translate requirements into execution plans
Preferred qualifications:
- Proven ability to leverage AI technologies and workflows to drive measurable operational efficiency
- Experience with monitoring, tracing, and observability tooling such as Grafana and Prometheus
- Proficiency in test frameworks and writing unit tests
- Demonstrated success in mentoring and developing engineering talent
