As Principal Software Engineer, Backend for the Platform & Cloud Services team, you will be a technical cornerstone and architect-level individual contributor responsible for driving the architecture, design, and implementation of critical product features and services. This is a hands-on senior role requiring both technical expertise and mentoring capabilities.
Key responsibilities include:
- Architect and design complex, large-scale distributed backend systems, owning critical architecture decisions and infrastructure choices
- Define and steer technical strategy for major components and product features in collaboration with engineering leadership and product managers
- Lead implementation of large-scale features from design through deployment, solving challenging technical problems hands-on
- Champion engineering excellence through rigorous code and design reviews, promoting best practices in clean code, scalable design, and DevOps maturity
- Mentor senior, mid-level, and junior engineers, elevating technical skills across the team
- Drive quality and security initiatives including component test scenarios, API test automation, and security best practices throughout the development lifecycle
- Identify performance bottlenecks and lead optimization initiatives for system performance, scalability, and reliability
- Evaluate and recommend emerging tools, technologies, and frameworks to keep the platform modern and innovative
You will work at the intersection of mass-market consumer devices, automotive, and industrial IoT, enabling connectivity in the world's most remote places. The role is based in Bangalore with a hybrid arrangement of 3 days per week in office.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 16+ years of progressive software engineering experience with strong focus on backend development and distributed systems architecture
- Proven track record of technical leadership including owning major feature designs, mentoring engineers, people management, and driving engineering-wide initiatives
- Extensive experience with microservices architecture, API design (REST, gRPC), and API documentation (Swagger/OpenAPI)
- Strong expertise in scalable data stores (SQL and NoSQL), caching systems (Redis, Memcached), and message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ, Pub/Sub)
- Deep proficiency in one or more programming languages (Java, Go, Python)
- Solid understanding of cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure) with hands-on experience in containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI)
- Strong knowledge of engineering best practices including automated testing frameworks (JUnit, TestNG)
- Experience with observability tools for monitoring, logging, and tracing (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/EFK stack, OpenTelemetry)
- Telecommunications domain experience and understanding of 3GPP specifications related to EPC and 5G Core highly advantageous
- Excellent communication skills with ability to articulate complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences
- Proven ability to work cross-functionally and influence decisions through technical expertise
- Active use of AI tools with track record of integrating new tools into workflow quickly
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience)
