Seeds is an early-stage RIA fintech startup empowering financial advisors to grow their business while delivering meaningful investing experiences. The company is building wealth-tech solutions in a $6.6+ trillion industry, with a remote-first culture emphasizing trust, transparency, and collaboration. As Principal Software Engineer, you will own the technical direction of a major platform area—such as the data foundation, cloud platform, or product intelligence—reporting directly to the CTO. You'll set architecture that multiple workstreams build upon over years, while continuing to ship features and services alongside the team. Your responsibilities include: • Own and evolve the architecture of a major platform component, deciding what to build, retire, and how to scale it • Build across the full stack, shipping production features and services, plus prototypes and reference implementations • Set technical direction where none exists, framing problems and making the case to engineering, product, and leadership • Shape the roadmap with product and business teams, identifying where technology creates competitive advantage • Make build-versus-buy and technology decisions with multi-year implications, weighing cost, risk, and team capability • Set the bar for architecture, security, and data correctness across workstreams in a regulated financial-services environment where accuracy and auditability are non-negotiable • Develop other senior engineers through design reviews, pairing, and mentoring • Bridge engineering and the investment business, serving as the engineering voice on domain and regulatory questions The company emphasizes hands-on work with AI coding agents (like Claude Code) as an enhancement to engineering judgment, not a replacement. You'll help define how the team builds with AI, deciding where agents fit and measuring effectiveness. REQUIREMENTS: • 12+ years building and evolving production systems, including setting architecture for a major product or platform area that multiple teams built on • Track record of setting technical direction without formal authority, with proposals others adopted and decisions you saw through for years • Deep, demonstrated expertise in at least one area: cloud architecture/infrastructure on AWS or comparable cloud; agentic software development with agents doing production engineering under guardrails; or building AI capabilities into product platforms • Broad architecture range across backend, frontend, data, and cloud; productivity in the stack (C#/.NET Core, React/TypeScript, PostgreSQL, AWS) or comparable • Experience defining and framing problems nobody had articulated, choosing what not to do, and explaining trade-offs to stakeholders who disagreed • Experience with systems where correctness is audited, ideally in regulated industries • Fluency with AI-assisted development, building with agents daily, with clear perspective on where they belong in team workflows • Excellent written and verbal communication, including design proposals that move decisions with engineers, product, and executives • Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent demonstrated experience BONUS: Financial services, FinTech, or wealth-tech background (especially portfolio management, trading, or performance reporting); SOC 2 or comparable regulated environments; public body of work on architecture or AI in engineering (writing, talks, open source); experience modernizing legacy platforms.
