Roblox is seeking a Principal Network Engineer to lead the design, deployment, and operations of its global backbone and edge network infrastructure. This is a high-impact technical leadership role where you'll work cross-functionally to plan network growth supporting tens of millions of daily users across the platform. In this role, you will serve as the principal engineer responsible for Roblox's backbone network architecture and strategy. You'll drive future design and deployment of large-scale network infrastructure, engage in design qualification and validation of emerging technologies, and ensure new solutions are deployable and safely operable at scale. You'll collaborate closely with the Network Tooling Team to automate workflows and enhance telemetry, observability, and alerting systems. Additionally, you'll participate in on-call rotation to support global network infrastructure 24/7. This is an individual contributor role at the principal level—you'll guide technical direction and mentor engineers, but the focus is on technical depth and architectural leadership rather than people management. You'll tackle unique complexities inherent in running a global hosting platform serving billions of interactions. Roblox operates on a hybrid schedule: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday in-office at the Ashburn data center, with optional presence on Monday and Friday. REQUIREMENTS: - 8+ years of work experience designing, deploying, and operating large-scale networks - 5+ years of experience designing and managing large-scale backbone and edge networks - Hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting routing and switching protocols (BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, RSVP-TE) - Working knowledge of network protocols (TCP/UDP, DHCP, DNS) and experience with IPv4 and IPv6 - Experience in multi-vendor environments with hands-on networking hardware experience - Experience in at least one programming language (Python, Go, C/C++) is a plus - Track record of successful collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
